IT’S the marquee NFL game of the opening round as the Green Bay Packers host the Seattle Seahawks at Lambeau Field on Sunday afternoon.
The Packers and the Seahawks are currently +1000 to win Super Bowl LII so there’s little between these sides and it could be a classic offense vs. defense game.
Star quarterback Aaron Rodgers is one of the best passers in the game and his receiving ranks look strong this year, but he’s coming up against a Seattle defense which has been tough to get past in recent years and has been bolstered in the off-season.
Vegas has the Packers as the -3 favorites due to the home field advantage, but this game could go either way and we look at which team has the edge going into this vital week-one clash.
The best NFL odds are available with 5Dimes, which is offering a great sign-up bonus.
Why the Green Packers can win
Aaron Rodgers is a big name to have in your team and despite not leading the Packers to the Super Bowl last year, he did everything in his power.
Rodgers stamped himself as one of the elite QB’s in the league and it was on the back of his play that got the Packers out of a poor situation early in the season.
The Packers started the 2016/2017 season in a 4-6 hole, but Rodgers led his team to six straight victories and there were some amazing moments along the way. Last-second plays were the winning flavor for Green Bay last season and with over 4000 passing yards and 40 passing touchdowns, Rodgers was in the form of his life.
They were struck by the injury of wide receiver Jordy Nelson which didn’t help, but he’s back and the addition of Martellus Bennett is a great bonus.
Defensively, the Packers aren’t the greatest team in the competition, but they’re focused on the offensive power and that’s what will win them many games this season.
Why the Seahawks can win
Ever heard that defense wins championships? That might not be the mantra of many NFL teams, but it suits the Seattle Seahawks perfectly.
The Seahawks have a stout defense which includes Earl Thomas III and the controversial Kam Chancellor, but they went out and added more defensive strength in the off-season which should put fear into any opposing offense.
On the other hand, many people are asking about the Seahawks offense and its inability to put up big numbers.
Seattle love to grind out a win without scoring many points, but against the likes of Green Bay they will have to find the end zone on multiple occasions. Quarterback Russell Wilson is more than capable of throwing the long ball and he has a nice receiving team to help him.
Doug Baldwin and former New Orleans Saint Jimmy Graham are big targets which should allow Wilson to have some freedom with ball in hand. He does struggle to find time in the pocket, but the improving offensive line will help him out.
The Seahawks can win because they play tough and these early-season games are often tightly contested affairs.
Notable Packers vs. Seahawks stats
* Packers are 4-0 ATS (against the spread) in their last four home games
* Packers are 6-1 ATS in their last seven games in September
* Packers are 4-1 ATS in their last five vs. NFC teams
* Home team is 5-1 ATS in their last six meetings
* Seahawks are 0-4 ATS in their last four road games
* Seahawks are 0-4-1 ATS in their last five meetings in Green Bay
NFL Week 1: Packers vs. Seahawks game prediction
It’s tough to go against a home side that has plenty of offensive power, so we’re not going to.
The Packers pack plenty of punch on the offensive side of the ball and the Seattle defense will have to be at its best to stop the Rodgers train.
The star QB will be out for the MVP award this season and if the Packers can keep their receivers healthy, expect Rodgers to put up career-best numbers.
The statistics are all in favor of the Green Bay Packers (-3 at 5Dimes) and that’s the best play for this high-profile Sunday afternoon clash.
