Green Bay Packers trade wide receiver to Las Vegas Raiders

Davante Adams traded to Las Vegas Rams

The Green Bay Packers have traded superstar wide receiver Davante Adams to the Las Vegas Raiders for a first and second round pick. This is yet another massive trade and it comes on the heels of Aaron Rodgers signing a new contract extension.

Rodgers’ new deal was a massive contract worth a lot of money and was clearly going to have salary cap consequences for the Packers. No one, however, expected them to deal one of his best friends and the best weapon in the NFL.

Davante Adams is coming off of two all pro seasons and at the age of 29, he still has a lot of good football to come. He had 123 catches last season for 1553 yards and 11 touchdowns. He has consistently been one of the best receivers in the league and the Packers do not have any clear successor.

The Packers expect to contend, but with Adams demanding a long term deal that the Packers can’t afford, they had to move him. This leaves the Packers with an iffy receiving core led by Allan Lazard and Randall Cobb. Not exactly the elite option that Adams was. They do now have four picks in the first two rounds of the NFL Draft and it is expected that at least one of those picks will be used on a wide receiver.

For Adams, he joins his college teammate from Fresno St. in Derek Carr and the Raiders are clearly ready to compete for a Super Bowl. Many pundits expected the Raiders to potentially sell off assets due to the Broncos trade for Russell Wilson. With Wilson, Patrick Mahomes and Justin Herbert in the division, the Raiders clearly looked like the worst team in the division. Now, they have done the opposite and given Derek Carr one of the best weapons in the league.

Adams will join a strong Raiders team that made the playoffs with a 10-7 record. They have one of the best tight ends in the league in Darren Waller and a good receiver in Hunter Renfrow. With Adams, their offense under new coach Josh McDaniels should be firing on all cylinders.

The AFC west is stacked at this point and all four teams will have Super Bowl aspirations. In recent memory, there has not been a better division on paper and all the inter-divisional matchups are approaching must-watch territory. Davante Adams instantly raises the profile of the Raiders and they are building something. It is a risky deal for them considering the competition, but any time you can trade for a player of Adams’ caliber, you have to do it.
