Indiana sports betting bill moves forward without online gambling

Indiana is a step closer to legalising sports betting, although the future of online wagering in the state is less clear.

The House of Representatives in Indianapolis this week voted 78-15 in favour of legislative changes that include a number of proposed gambling reforms.

Regulation of sports wagering is the headline act on a bill that also calls for the relocation of a casino in Gary and the development of a new gaming venue in Terre Haute.

The ticket initially included provisions for online betting, but they were removed by Ben Smaltz of the House Public Policy Committee.

A separate committee will finalise the details of Senate Bill 552 before it is sent to the upper house for approval.

It is expected the success of mobile sports betting in New Jersey will lead to a swell of support for the legalisation of online gambling.

Most of the US states that have introduced sports wagering have also cleared a path for remote betting via the internet, although New York is a notable exception.
