The ticket initially included provisions for online betting, but they were removed by Ben Smaltz of the House Public Policy Committee.

A separate committee will finalise the details of Senate Bill 552 before it is sent to the upper house for approval.

It is expected the success of mobile sports betting in New Jersey will lead to a swell of support for the legalisation of online gambling.

Most of the US states that have introduced sports wagering have also cleared a path for remote betting via the internet, although New York is a notable exception.
