Irish star Paul Hughes decries decision in PFL Dubai Main Event

Hughes v Nurmagomedov

Paul Hughes has voiced his strong disagreement with the judges’ decision to award Usman Nurmagomedov a majority decision victory at the PFL Dubai event on Saturday night.

The Irish fighter, who entered the bout as a heavy betting site underdog, was visibly frustrated after the result, taking to Instagram to share his thoughts.

“I think the judges’ scorecards were pretty ridiculous. We all thought I won that one,” Hughes stated.

Hughes delivered a commendable performance, showing exceptional takedown defense and landing consistent body shots against the undefeated Nurmagomedov.

The fight was further complicated by repeated low blows from Nurmagomedov, which led to a point deduction.

Despite Hughes controlling large portions of the early rounds, an accidental head clash in the fourth round allowed Nurmagomedov to recover and shift the fight’s momentum.

The judges scored the fight 48-46 in favor of Nurmagomedov on two scorecards, while the third judge ruled it a 47-47 draw.

Hughes, however, believes the head clash marked a turning point. “I feel like I was breaking him,” he explained.

“I was ripping him to the body, and I felt him wheezing. My momentum was building, but the headbutt gave him time to recover.”

Hughes expressed disappointment with the outcome but remained determined to prove himself. “I’m gutted. I really am. I need to get that belt back. I deserve it.”

The fight sparked significant controversy, with many fans and fellow fighters rallying behind Hughes. Dillion Danis labeled the decision a “robbery,” while Conor McGregor took to social media to offer his support, stating, “Easy win for Hughes. He dominated that fight.”

Despite the setback, Hughes is resolute in his goal of becoming champion, maintaining that his performance showcased his capabilities at the highest level.
