We are less than 30 days from the commencement of the 2022/23 English Premier League season, and now is the time to start combing through some prop bets. One of the most fun things to bet on throughout the season is who will win the Golden Boot, which is awarded to the player with the most goals in league play. This coming season should feature one of the most interesting races in recent history, as there has been a great influx of talent and there are a bunch of guys in the running for the Golden Boot.
The outright favorite is Erling Haaland at +350, and that’s actually a great bet. He was signed by Manchester City during this summer transfer window and will be expected to make an immediate impact at the point of the attack. Through three years for Borussia Dortmund in the Bundesliga, Haaland scored 62 goals in 67 games – and he is only 21 years old. He can already finish with the best of them and now will join a team that will have a ton of talent feeding him the ball. Haaland will receive so many goalscoring opportunities playing in front of guys like Kevin De Bruyne, Bernardo Silva and Joao Cancelo that it’s hard to see him not winning the Golden Boot. It may be a square bet, but Haaland is set up to succeed unlike anyone else in the EPL. Take him and watch him bang in goals.
The next favorite is Mohamed Salah at +450 with Bovada. He was tied with Son Heung-min for the Golden Boot in the past season and now has even more pressure on him to score goals with Liverpool losing Sadio Mane. However, the Reds revamped their attack with the signing of Darwin Nunez and already have Diogo Jota and Luis Diaz on the roster. All three of these guys should play bigger roles, and Salah is 30 years old. The Egyptian superstar could be due for more rest this season, and that might hurt his chances of winning the Golden Boot. At this time, there is better value elsewhere.
The next three guys in the market are Harry Kane at +600, Cristiano Ronaldo at +1000 and Son Heung-min at +1200. Kane and Son play on the same team, and having two guys score at their level works against them in terms of this award. Winning the Golden Boot requires a sort of funneled system of football that feeds one guy in front of the net. Ronaldo has reportedly requested a transfer from Manchester United, so it’s best to just wait to see how his situation shakes out.
That all being said, Son is a good bet at +1200. While he and Kane will hurt each other’s chances, Son scored 23 Premier League goals last year without scoring a single penalty. If there’s a Kane injury or Son starts taking penalties, Son has as good a chance as anyone of topping the charts. While it’s kind of a longshot, there is a path for the Korean star to win this award. Considering the price, it’s worth a bet.
The last guy we will mention is probably the most underrated player in the league. That would be West Ham United’s Jarrod Bowen. He started off slow last season but hit his stride later in the season and finished with 12 goals. If he has truly taken that next step to becoming a great goalscorer, then his odds of +5000 will be a steal. When you look through the West Ham roster, there aren’t a ton of proven goalscorers. Bowen has shown he can be a prolific scorer, and while it’s a stretch, he could take a massive leap into Golden Boot contention if he gets off to a fast start. At +5000, why not? Bowen is a rising star who should catch a lot of eyes in the coming season, and this might be the longest his odds will ever be.
