MANCHESTER UNITED will be looking to uphold their rich vein of form in 2018 with a trip to Burnley this weekend.
The Red devils took full advantage of Manchester City’s slump against Liverpool to trim the gap at the top to 12 points, with Jose Mourinho adamant that he has not conceded the chase for the Premier League title just yet.
The unforgiving stretch of games during Christmas proved costly to United, who dropped pivotal points in draws against Leicester City, Southampton and this weekend’s opponents, Burnley.
Although the Boxing Day draw to the Clarets was down to slapstick defending that saw the hosts trail the game by two goals at one point, the 2-2 draw with the Foxes left United desperately ruing their missed chances, having had several clear-cut chances to kill the game off.
Jose Mourinho’s charges have built up a head of steam with three wins since the turn of the New Year; their most emphatic being the 3-0 decimation of the embattled Stoke City in the Premier League.
Jose Mourinho is a great many things, but the one thing that he isn’t is a failure at Manchester United. Pep Guardiola may be essentially walking the League with his City barricades, but United aren’t exactly scraping the bottom of the barrel either. The fact that United still hold a three-point advantage in second place despite an inept showing during the clustered festive season is a vivid indication of just how much the club has progressed under the Portuguese veteran.
Speaking of progress, Burnley has undoubtedly been the surprise package of the season.
The Clarets may not be on the brink of football folklore like Leicester when they won the League two seasons ago, but the club deserve plaudits for the milestone attained this season. Solidifying themselves in the top-half of the Premier League table is, by and large, no mean feat.
United took full advantage of a favorable fixture by taking part in a warm weather training camp in Dubai, which seems to have done the players a world of good. Only Michael Carrick, Eric Bailly and Zlatan Ibrahimovic remain sidelined for the trip to Burnley as Ashley Young is available for selection, having served the last of his three-match suspension.
Burnley will have to make do without Tom Heaton, Robbie Brady, Stephen Ward and top scorer Chris Wood, who have all been ruled out with injury.

It has become pointless to put a limit on what Jesse Lingard can do.
The 25-year old has surpassed double figures for the season and has currently amassed 16 goals in all competitions, seven of which have come in the Premier League.
As such, the England international is expected to maintain his purple patch even as United visit Burnley.
Match prediction
If ever there was anything that Manchester City’s loss to Liverpool taught us, it is that the chase for the Premier League crown is far from over. Pretty or not, Jose Mourinho will be looking to secure all three points on the road the only way he knows how.
