KPL odds and best bets – Wazito vs. Mathare United punting tips

KPL

KPLSaturday, April 21 – 4:15p.m local time – Camp Toyoyo, Nairobi, Kenya.

Mathare United will be looking to return back to winning ways with a trip to Wazito this Saturday, in the Kenyan Premier League.

The Slum Boys will be playing their second away game in as many weeks, with the hope of widening the gap at the summit of the league.

Gor Mahia’s participation in the CAF Confederation Cup meant that the reigning KPL champions were exempted from League duties last weekend, offering the right set of circumstances for Francis Kimanzi’s charges to stretch the gap with K’Ogalo, and essentially put the pressure on the 16-time champions.

It was a missed opportunity for the league leaders, who slumped to a 2-1 defeat to Post Rangers in their last KPL outing. Head coach Francis Kimanzi decried his sides’ mundane performance that led to the loss, seeing as a win could have opened up a four-point lead over second placed Gor Mahia.

Posta Rangers sent a huge statement of intent when they scored two goals in quick succession in the first half. Kennedy Otieno grabbed the lead for the hosts with a towering header in the 10th minute, after he evaded defenders following a long throw in by Luke Ochieng.

Skipper Jockins Atudo rose at the back post to double the advantage for the hosts three minutes later, getting on the finishing end of John Nairuka’s perfect cross delivery into the area.

Mathare finally came alive through Clifford Alwanga’s header midway through the first half, but Rangers grabbed the match by the scuff of the neck to deny the League leaders any of the three points up for grabs.

The defeat- which was only their second thus far into the season- still has Mathare United top of the table with 23 points- a point above the defending champions who still have three games in hand.

Although they were worryingly swept aside, Kimanzi- who also doubles up as the head coach for the Kenya Under-23’s football team- isn’t one to lick his wounds for too long.

The match with Wazito will play an intricate role in shaping their bid for title, given that Gor Mahia returns to Premier League action against Thika United this weekend.

Mayienga are currently in high spirits after advancing into the group stage of the CAF Confederation Cup on the away goal rule, following a 2-2 aggregate draw with SuperSport United on Wednesday night.

The match against Thika may be a chance for K’Ogalo to close in on Mathare, although operating at full throttle while on continental duty may come at a cost.

Wazito vs. Mathare United match prediction

Wazito FC earned promotion to the KPL after finishing second on goal difference in the National Super League last season, behind eventual winners Vihiga United. They have since made relatively good attempts to solidify their place in the top flight, with 11 points from their opening 10 games placing them 12th on the log.

Scoring hasn’t exactly been Wazito’s forte, whereas Mathare are fully aware Gor may falter on Sunday having been depleted midweek against the South African side.
