La Liga 2021/22 Matchweek 4 betting picks & top odds

La Liga returns to action for Matchweek 4 this weekend with six teams tied at the top of the table with seven points each. Two of those top teams, Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid, are among our La Liga best bets this week. Here’s our breakdown of those two games as well as Getafe vs Elche for this weekend’s La Liga soccer betting picks.

Espanyol vs Atletico Madrid

Espanyol de Barcelona (0-2-1) opened the season with two 0-0 draws on the road against Osasuna and at home against Villarreal before losing in their third game by a score of 1-0 to Mallorca. Atletico Madrid (2-1-0) settled for a disappointing 2-2 draw in its last league match at home against Villarreal. Before that, Madrid had defeated Celta Vigo 2-1 and Elche 1-0.

Antoine Griezmann returns to Atletico Madrid after a disappointing stint in Barcelona. Griezmann thrived in his five seasons with Atletico, and his return at the transfer window should be great for both the player and the club. Going up against a punchless Espanyol offense on Sunday, Atletico Madrid should be able to push the tempo on offense to find a goal or two en route to a road win.

Real Madrid vs Celta Vigo

Real Madrid CF (2-1-0) opened its La Liga season with three straight road matches, defeating Alaves 4-1, drawing Levante 3-3 and beating Real Betis 1-0. Madrid returns to Estadio Santiago Bernabeu for its first match in this arena since March 1, 2020.

RC Celta de Vigo (0-1-2) scored its one and only goal of the season in a home-opening 2-1 loss to Atletico Madrid on August 15. Celta Vigo has since drawn Osasuna 0-0 and lost to the Athletic Club 1-0. Real Madrid is 6-1-0 in its last seven games against Celta Vigo with all six of those wins coming by two goals or more. Should we expect anything different on Sunday? No. Real Madrid is well worth laying the chalk at home in what should be an easy victory.

Getafe vs Elche

Getafe CF (0-0-3) and Alaves are the only two teams in La Liga that have opened the 2021-22 campaign with an 0-0-3 record. To Getafe’s defense, the opening schedule has been brutal with road matches at Valencia and Barcelona and a home match against Sevilla. Similarly, Elche CF (0-2-1) has also had to deal with a tough opening schedule with home matches against Athletic Club and Sevilla and a road match against Atletico Madrid.

Both of these clubs should look at this Monday’s matchup as their first legitimate shot at a win. The total for this one is set at just two goals due to both teams’ offensive ineptitude this season. Neither is bound to score many goals this season, but in a more even bottom-of-the-table matchup like this one, reaching or exceeding the low total of only two total goals seems attainable. Look for Getafe to break a 1-1 tie with a goal to send this one over the posted total.
