Liverpool vs Man City EPL betting tips

Liverpool will lock horns with Manchester City on Sunday afternoon in what is indisputably the biggest matchup of the 2019/20 English Premier League season.

Jurgen Klopp’s charges had to fight from behind last weekend to overcome a gutsy Aston Villa side and maintain their unbeaten run. The newly promoted Villans shocked the runaway league leaders when they stormed ahead in the 21st minute thanks to a volley by Trezeguet – his first goal for the club since signing from Turkish side Kasımpaşa last English summer.

Liverpool looked on course to suffer their first defeat of the season until Andy Robertson equalised with a back-post header in the 87th minute. A second header, this time from Sadio Mane at the front post, completed Liverpool’s comeback in the dying moments of injury time.

Manchester City suffered the same fate as the league leaders as they had to come from behind to force a win against Southampton last weekend. James Ward-Prowse silenced the Etihad when he gave his side the lead in the 13th minute, which saw the Saints take an unexpected advantage into the interval.

That lead, however, was relinquished 20 minutes before the final whistle when Sergio Aguero restored parity with City’s first shot on target. The champions then went on to secure maximum points after Kyle Walker thumped the leather into the back of the net with four minutes of regulation time remaining.

The win, while far from pretty, means the Citizens are still in outright second with 25 points, some six points behind Liverpool.

Liverpool team news

Jurgen Klopp has a number of injury woes ahead of Sunday’s encounter.

Captain Jordan Henderson, who missed Liverpool’s midweek 2-1 win over Genk in the UEFA Champions League, remains a minor doubt due to illness, while Xherdan Shaqiri is certain to miss City’s visit due to a calf injury.

Both Joel Matip and Nathaniel Clyne have been ruled out of the clash with knee injuries, with the latter expected to be sidelined until 2020.

Manchester City team news

Like his opposite number, Pep Guardiola has several injury concerns to contend with.

Goalkeeper Ederson looks set to miss the trip to Merseyside having picked up a thigh injury during Wednesday night’s 1-1 draw away to Atalanta in the Champions League.

Rodri, who has a hamstring injury, looks poised to return after the upcoming international break, while David Silva is still nursing a muscle injury that ruled him out of the midweek European encounter.

The trio of Oleksandr Zinchenko, Leroy Sane and Aymeric Laporte remain long-term absentees with various injuries.

Mohamed Salah may not be anywhere near his brilliant best this season, something that may be linked to the ankle injury suffered early last month, but the Egyptian remains one of Liverpool’s deadliest attacking threats.

With five EPL goals to his name and eight in all competitions, Salah has enough scoring form behind him to suggest he will trouble the Man City defence on Sunday.

Also, the reigning EPL Golden Boot winner has a decent record against the Citizens. Not only does Salah have three goals from his last five games against City, the Reds have won every meeting in which he has scored.

Liverpool vs Manchester City betting predictions

Having started the season with 10 wins and a draw, Liverpool are now 28 games and over 10 months unbeaten in the Premier League. They are also undefeated in their last 45 EPL games at Anfield, a streak that stretches back to April 2017.

Although they have a six-point advantage over Manchester City, the Reds will certainly be wary of the champions. It was the Citizens who inflicted Liverpool’s last league defeat, a 2-1 result in January that proved decisive in the title race.

With the trophy on the line again, this is the kind match where any points will do. That said, Liverpool are very hard to match on their own patch.
