Liverpool vs. Paris Saint-Germain tips – 2018 Champions League betting

Liverpool v PSG

Liverpool v PSGTuesday, September 18 – 8:00p.m Local time – Anfield, Liverpool, United Kingdom

Liverpool will be in action on Tuesday night for the opening round of group stage matches in the 2018/19 UEFA Champions League.

The Reds, much like they have in the Premier League, will be looking to set the competition alight as they welcome French champions Paris Saint-Germain to Anfield in the Group C encounter.

Jurgen Klopp’s side put up a gutsy performance over the weekend with a 2-1 win away to Tottenham Hotspur in what was quite assuredly their biggest test thus far in the Premier League. Not many would have expected the Spurs to be so accommodating against perceived title rivals, as the result itself was against the balance of the match given Liverpool’s sheer dominance.

Despite their puissance from the first minute, the visitors had to wait until the closing stages of the first half to grab the lead through a Georginio Wijnaldum header. Tottenham’s back up keeper Michel Vorm got a weak punch at James Milner’s wicked swing from a corner but Eric Dier was there to head it to safety. The danger was however gone momentarily, as the ball fell to Wijnaldum who headed it over the line despite Vorm’s belated attempt to claw it back.

Roberto Firmino doubled the advantage with the easiest of finishes, as the Brazilian tapped in the ball from close range following a goalmouth melee that ensued after Sadio Mane’s low cross was turned onto the post by Jan Vertonghen.

Erik Lamela halved the score-line in the third minute of injury time, as he took the pace off of Christian Eriksen’s corner with his chest before lashing the ball past Alisson Becker. The goal only welcomed pressure to a Liverpool side that had for the longest time seemed in cruised control, but the Reds held on to collect their fifth consecutive win in the Premier League.

The win meant that Liverpool have won five of their opening games in the League for the first time since 1990; the last time they won the title in the English top division.

PSG prepared for their trip to England in imperious fashion as they registered an assertive 4-0 rout over Saint-Etienne in Ligue One on Friday. Julian Draxler put the French champions ahead with a glancing header midway through the first half while Edinson Cavani scored from the spot after he was fouled in the area six minutes after the restart.

Former Real Madrid and Manchester United forward Angel di Maria scored the third with a clinical left-footed finish after being played on via a deflection, whereas Moussa Diaby put a gloss on the final score with a late goal to complete the thrashing.

The Friday night encounter ensured that Thomas Tuchel’s charges will have sufficient resting time ahead of the trip to Anfield.

Although the French powerhouse will be without long-term injury absentees in Dani Alvez, Layvin Kurzawa and Lassana Diarra, Tuesday’s match will see the return of the attacking duo of Neymar and Kylian Mbappe.

Neymar was rested in the win over the weekend, but the latter missed the match on suspension having received a straight red during their emphatic win over Nimes.

Dejan Lovren is set to continue with his prolonged spell on the sidelines after returning from Croatia’s campaign in the 2018 FIFA World Cup with a stomach problem, while Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Rhian Brewster remain the key long-term absentees.

Roberto Firmino is likewise a doubt as the forward will have to face a late fitness test after sustaining what looked like an unpleasant eye injury against Spurs.

Liverpool vs. PSG betting predictions

The meeting between Liverpool and PSG promises to be an interesting bout given the commanding nature of both sides in their respective Leagues.

The visitors have maintained a one hundred percent start to the season in Ligue One, netting a minimum of three goals on their way to scoring a staggering 17 goals in their first five opening matches of the campaign.

Liverpool have similarly yet to drop points in the Premier League this season, and currently lie second on the log behind leaders Chelsea who have a superior goal difference.

Both sides have a lot to prove in the Champions League, and will as such look to make a strong start in a group that has Napoli and Serbian SuperLiga champions Red Star Belgrade.
