Liverpool are set to kick start their 2018/19 English Premier League campaign with a match against West Ham United this weekend.
The encounter, set to be played at Anfield, will be among a host of scintillating matches that will see the first weekend of Premier League football close with a bout between Arsenal and Manchester City.
For a club with a history as rich and far-reaching as Liverpool, it’s baffling beyond laughable proportions as to how the Reds have never won the Premier League title; their last taste of success in the domestic League coming in 1990. They came strikingly close during the 2013/14 season under the stewardship of Brendan Rodgers, and could have lifted the title had they not been truncated by Chelsea and Crystal Palace.
All that however now seems like faded memories of a long forgotten nightmare, as Liverpool are heavy favorites in the race for the Premier League title ahead of the new season; this coming after the Reds exhibited decorum and astuteness in carrying out their summer transfers.
It’s not so much that the new signings arrived at Melwood well before deadline day, but rather that the acquisitions were exactly what the Merseyside club needed. The four new signings in Alisson Becker, Fabinho, Naby Keita and Xherdan Shakiri arrived at Anfield over the course of the English summer which unequivocally translates to four less problems for Jurgen Klopp.

Liverpool’s longstanding problems between the sticks which could not be addressed by Simon Mignolet and the subsequent acquisition of Loris Karius could seemingly, if not assuredly, be put to rest following the signing of Alisson from Roma.
Having learnt the hard way following a goalkeeping howler committed by Karius during last season’s UEFA Champions League final loss to Real Madrid, the Reds did not flinch when they splashed a staggering £67m to secure the services of Alisson from the Serie A club; breaking the transfer record to make the Brazilian the most expensive goalkeeper in the world.
This comes barely eight months after Liverpool broke another transfer record when they signed Virgil van Dijk from Southampton in the January window. It has been a busy window for Liverpool and getting their transfers done early amid the demands of the newly enacted transfer deadline is nothing short of admirable.
The Reds started off their pre-season tour of the United States with a bit of a whimper as they fell to 3-1 defeat to Borussia Dortmund in their opening match of the International Champions Cup, but soon found their feet to register emphatic 2-1 and 4-1 wins over Manchester City and Manchester United respectively.
West Ham have also had their fair share on dealings in the transfer window, having signed a number of players most notably Lukasz Fabianski from Swansea, Felipe Anderson from Lazio and Jack Wilshere who was released by Arsenal.
The Hammers have had an embattled pre-season campaign, as they most recently lost 3-2 in their last preparation match against Swiss side FC Winterthur.
Manuel Pellegrini’s woes could further be compounded, as he is set to start the season without key first team players who are sidelined with various injuries. Andy Carroll has been ruled out for the first two months of the season having undergone ankle surgery while Manuel Lanzini (knee surgery), Jordan Hugill (hamstring tendon strain) and Winston Reid (knee surgery) likewise face a lengthy spell on the sidelines.
Liverpool haven’t been spared either, as they may start their campaign without defenders Joel Matip and Ragnar Klavan and strikers Dominic Solanke and Divock Origi due to injury.
Liverpool vs. West Ham betting predictions
Even before Jurgen Klopp addressed key concerns in his squad, West Ham were still pales in comparison to the Reds.
The prolific trio of Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah has the attacking incentive and clinical edge that certainly ranks among the best in Europe.
As such, it’s hard envisioning a disappointing opening day for Liverpool given the stability injected into the squad this summer.
