The defending Premier League champions, Manchester City, have signed 21-year-old Spanish left-back Sergio Gomez from Anderlecht for a fee of £11 million. This signing comes on the heels of City failing to secure Marc Cucurella’s services, with that player then moving to Chelsea. Gomez was a coveted asset on the transfer market and City will be pleased to have potentially found their left-back of the future.
This season, it is expected Gomez will rotate with Joao Cancelo as the starting left-back for Pep Guardiola’s side. He slots in as a direct replacement for Ukrainian wing-back Oleksandr Zinchenko, who left for Arsenal earlier in the transfer window.
Gomez had spent time in both the Barcelona and Borussia Dortmund youth academy before moving to Belgium and playing for Anderlecht last season. Considering the talent Barca and Dortmund have developed, Gomez is in good company and City will be hoping he is the next superstar to come up through those clubs.
Last year for Anderlecht, Gomez wowed scouts with his crossing ability. He also scored six goals across 40 appearances. Due to his success in Belgium, he immediately caught the attention of bigger clubs.
Gomez won’t change City’s odds too much this season, as they are already the clear favorites to win the Premier League title. After the opening weekend of the season, City look every bit the title favorite they were projected to be. While it’s likely they win it all, we are only one game into the new season and City’s title odds – -200 at Bovada – are far too short to warrant a bet.
It remains to be seen if Gomez will play for City this weekend in their game against Bournemouth. The Cherries are a newly promoted team, and City are -3300 to win that game. While City fans will be hoping Gomez makes his debut this weekend, he may not be fit enough to play and Pep may decide he is best suited on the bench.
