The return of the Premier League after the international break will see Manchester City play host to Sean Dyche’s Burnley on Saturday afternoon.
The champions will be looking to maintain their place at summit of the table with a win, hoping that other results go their way; given how heavily Chelsea and Liverpool are breathing down their necks.
In a match that could have quite rightly set the tempo and provided a bragging right on which to build on for the rest of the season, Manchester City and Liverpool proved evenly matched as the two title contenders registered a disappointing goalless draw before the international break.
The champions cried foul after feeling they were denied two penalties earlier on when Dejan Lovren bundled over Sergio Aguero while Virgil van Dijk handled the ball in the area during an aerial duel. When referee Martin Atkinson finally pointed to the spot after van Dijk lunged on Leroy Sane, City couldn’t take their chance by the scuff of the neck, as Riyad Mahrez blazed the ball way over the bar from 12 yards.
Despite being forced to share the spoils, Pep Guardiola admitted to being happy with the draw, as did Jurgen Klopp – perhaps privy of the fact that two of the most probable title contenders couldn’t get the better of each other.
Sharing the spoils meant that City still maintained their place at the helm on the Premier League standings with 20 points, nevertheless on goals difference ahead of Chelsea and Liverpool in third.
Burnley on the other hand are twelfth on the log on eight points – 12 points behind the league leaders after registering a one-all draw with Huddersfield Town before the international break.
Sam Vokes put Burnley ahead in the 20th minute when he guided a header into the back of the net for his second goal in as many games, but German centre-back Schindler connected with Chris Lowe’s cross to score his first Premier League goal – one that secured the vital point in Turf Moor that will go a long away in aiding their survival hopes.
Kevin de Bruyne is in contention to make only his second appearance of the season having recovered from a nasty knee ligament injury, although the forward is expected to be fully fit for Tottenham’s visit to the Etihad the following weekend.
Fabian Delph remains a notable absentee whereas Ilkay Gundogan is another midfield doubt for the Citizens, seeing as he sat out the barren draw with Liverpool.
Sean Dyche could be without the services of James Tarkowski who withdrew from the England squad due to a groin injury, but Robbie Brady is closing in on a return from a long-term knee injury, even though the trip to Manchester may come a fraction too early for the Republic of Ireland international.
Manchester City vs. Burnley betting predictions
In order to consolidate their place on top of the Premier League standings, Manchester City will have to push for a positive outcome against the Clarets – taking into account that Chelsea face Manchester United while Liverpool will be away to Huddersfield Town this weekend.
