In October, gamblers in Mississippi placed wagers totaling $56.2 million on sporting events, representing a 32.7% decrease compared to the same month in the previous year ($83.5m).
However, this was a 30.4% increase when compared to the amount of bets that were received in September of this year, which totaled $43.1 million.
The FIFA World Cup, which started a few days ago, has already attracted significant betting activity. As a result of this, it is likely that November and December wagers will skyrocket above the percentage of the previous year.
The decrease in total wagers placed also led to a year-over-year fall in revenue for sports betting operators across the country. Mississippi sportsbooks ended the month with revenue of $7.7 million, which is 15.4% less than what they brought in the previous year during the same time period.
The state’s coastal casinos were once again by a wide margin the most visited establishments among players, bringing in a total of $35.8 million worth of wagers and generating $3.9 million in revenue.
There were a whopping $35.8 million worth of wagers placed on football, which accounts for 64% of the total wagers that were placed. According to the reports, football fans continue to place the most bets overall. The NFL season started in September.
Bets totaling $21.7 million were placed at the coastal casinos, while $5.4 million was wagered among the northern casinos, and $4.7 million was placed into the accounts of the central casino venues.
Thus, in terms of revenue, the coastal casinos came out on top, bringing in a total of $3.9 million, followed by the central casinos ($2.3m) and finally the northern casinos ($1.5m).
