Luka Modric has signed a one-year contract extension with Real Madrid, tying him to the Spanish soccer giants until the end of the 2024/25 season.

Named club captain following the departure of Nacho Fernandez at the end of last season, Modric is one of the most decorated midfielders of all time.

Since joining the Blancos from Tottenham Hotspur in 2012, the Croatian star has won 26 trophies with the Spanish side, including six Champions League titles.

Modric, who won the 2018 Ballon d’Or, has made 534 appearances for Madrid, scoring 39 goals.

Most recently, the 38-year-old midfielder played for Croatia at EURO 2024, where his side was eliminated at the group stage after finishing third in Group B.

The contract extension further boosts Carlo Ancelotti’s side, which recently completed the signing of French star Kylian Mbappe from Paris Saint-Germain.

Modric’s decision to stay at the Bernabeu comes amid huge interest from the Saudi Pro League.

Online bookmakers have Real Madrid listed as -188.68 outright favourites to retain their La Liga crown in the 2024/25 season.
