Newcastle United suffered a 2-0 defeat away to Aston Villa on Monday night. The loss, their second in five matches, saw the Magpies tumble to 14th on the table on 15 points, leaving them 13 points behind the champions and just five points above the drop zone.

Beaten by a Villa side that hadn’t won any of their last three league matches, Steve Bruce’s Magpies certainly will have their work cut out on Saturday when they take on the highest-scoring team in the Premier League.

Jamaal Lascelles continues a lengthy spell on the sidelines with a knee injury, with the defender not expected to return until the New Year. Winger Matt Ritchie, who has been out of action since damaging his ankle ligaments against Leicester in August, suffered a recent setback and is also ruled out of City’s visit.

Newcastle will welcome the return of midfielder Sean Longstaff, who is back from a three-match suspension after receiving a straight red against Wolverhampton Wanderers.
