NFL MVP futures betting: Will Mahomes go back-to-back?

The NFL MVP is essentially an award that goes to a quarterback on a playoff team. The last time a non-QB won the award was in 2012, and the last time a player on a non-playoff team won it was in 1973. With that criteria in place, let’s get into our NFL MVP betting picks for the upcoming season.

Patrick Mahomes

Patrick Mahomes is the quarterback for a perennial Super Bowl contender and he is loved by everyone. The Kansas City Chiefs star won the award last year and now has two MVPs in his young career. The Chiefs are the Super Bowl favorites and they will almost certainly make the playoffs, as Mahomes has won 12 games in every season he’s started. While he is the definitive favorite, this is still good value with the top NFL betting sites.

Mahomes will finish with around 5,000 passing yards, he will have 40 or so touchdown passes and he will limit his interceptions. That last point will be the key. Mahomes and the Chiefs throw the ball a ton and when that happens, turnovers can follow. If Mahomes can stay around the 12 interception mark he was at last year, and continue doing what he’s done throughout his career, he will be in the conversation yet again. Lamar Jackson

Baltimore should be in the playoffs this year, but the main reason we like Lamar Jackson for MVP is the changes the Ravens have made to their offense. They’ve brought in a pass-happy offensive coordinator in Todd Monken and added Odell Beckham Jr and Zay Flowers as wide receivers. Those two guys will pair with Rashod Bateman and Mark Andrews to give Lamar the best set of receivers he’s had in his career, which should drastically improve his passing efficiency.

And we know Lamar will do it on the ground. Jackson has run for over 700 yards in each season he’s played and has two seasons with over 1,000 rushing yards. If he can hit that number, he will be tough to bet against – as long as he improves as a passer.

Tua Tagovailoa

Tua Tagovailoa has the best situation of any quarterback in the NFL. With Jaylen Waddle and Tyreek Hill as his primary catching options at the Miami Dolphins, he will always have two top-10 receivers to throw to. The Dolphins are expected to be a playoff team, but the key for Tua will be his health.

Tagovailoa has battled injuries in every season and was in the MVP conversation last year before getting two concussions. While concussions are scary, Tua is apparently bulking up and learning how to take fewer hits. If he can stay healthy with his weapons, Tua will enter the elite QB conversation, and if Miami can win 12 or so games, the fan-favorite may just have what it takes to win the MVP.
