NFL Trade News: Seahawks send Russell Wilson to Broncos

Russell Wilson NFL news

In a surprise move, the Seattle Seahawks have traded their superstar quarterback Russell Wilson to the Denver Broncos. The Seahawks will receive some veteran players and a load of picks, but the Broncos will happily oblige in giving those up.

The Broncos have been in QB purgatory since Peyton Manning retired and have wasted plenty of draft capital hoping to find his replacement. Now, it’s pretty clear; they found their man.

Wilson had an illustrious 10-year career for the Seahawks that included the franchise’s sole Super Bowl victory. He was named to four All Pro teams and clearly established himself as an elite signal-caller.

The Seahawks had a down year in 2021 and Russ had some injury issues that sunk the team. It was his first time having a less than .500 winning percentage. Prior to last year, he had voiced displeasure at the Seahawks’ run-first approach to their offense, and it appears he was still lobbying to change teams.

Now, Wilson will join a young Broncos team with lots of talent on offense. Wide receivers Jerry Jeudy and Courtland Sutton have shown flashes, and running back Javonte Williams looks like a burgeoning star. The Broncos are officially in ‘win now’ mode and have their eyes on the Super Bowl.

It will not be a cakewalk, however, as the Broncos finished bottom in their division last season. Kansas City’s Patrick Mahomes and the LA Chargers’ Justin Herbert are both young, elite quarterbacks that will not make it easy on the Broncos. It will be an ultra-competitive division that should feature some extremely entertaining games.

For the Seahawks, this will signify the start of a rebuild. For many years, Wilson was the only reason this team had any success in the NFL, and it appears he was fed up with carrying the load. They never built their offensive line and have had a tough time defensively ever since the ‘Legion of Boom’ got broken up.

It’s a long, dark path ahead for the Seahawks. They will have extra draft picks to help speed up their rebuild, but the odds of finding a difference-maker like Russ are very small. They will most likely have former Broncos QB Drew Lock under center this year and it will be hard for fans to get excited over that. He has been extremely underwhelming in his three-year career.

Even though there were murmurs of a Wilson trade, this still comes as a shock. Quarterbacks of his caliber don’t get traded often, and for good reason; it is extremely difficult to replace them. He instantly makes the Broncos a contender and simultaneously sends the Seahawks to the basement of the league. The football season just ended, but the new campaign cannot come soon enough and this move just adds more intrigue to the most intriguing league in sports.
