Opelka reaches Brisbane Final, eyes first title since 2022

Reilly-Opelka

Reilly Opelka secured a spot in the Brisbane International final on Saturday with a commanding 6-3, 7-6(4) victory over Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard in a clash of big servers.

This marks Opelka’s first final appearance since 2022, following an extended battle with hip and wrist injuries.

The American came into the semi-final as an underdog despite his impressive quarter-final upset of Novak Djokovic.

He wasted no time asserting his dominance, racing to a 3-0 lead in the first set and defending all four break points he faced throughout the match.

Mpetshi Perricard showed flashes of brilliance but struggled with consistency on his second serve, allowing Opelka to capitalize on key points.

“It is great to be in another final,” Opelka said after the match.

“I didn’t think I would be playing one of these at all after the past year. One guy, kind of a miracle, a Canadian guy fixed me and I started training, and once I was out of pain, the confidence came back.”

The 27-year-old’s road to recovery has been long and challenging. After being sidelined for nearly two years, this week’s Brisbane final represents a significant milestone in his return to form.

Opelka will face Jiri Lehecka in Sunday’s championship match, entering as a +110 underdog according to Bovada.

However, a slight wrist issue remains a concern after Opelka required a medical timeout during the first set of his tennis semi-final.

“Sometimes it happens,” Opelka explained.

“It started hurting a little in the second round. I tweaked it a little bit on a reaction shot, but it will be alright. I am not sweating too much.”

Opelka’s resurgence in Brisbane has also improved his standing in Australian Open betting markets.

Initially overlooked by the top sportsbooks, he now sits at +6600 on Bovada to claim his first Grand Slam title in Melbourne, making him the 10th favourite for the tournament.

With his confidence restored and a title within reach, Opelka’s performance in Brisbane could mark the beginning of a triumphant comeback season.
