Alexander Volkov (32-8-0) and Alistair Overeem (47-18-0) are both sitting right below the UFC Heavyweight division’s elite challengers. These two will look to clear up the pecking order in the division when they clash in the main event of UFC Fight Night 184 this Saturday night in Las Vegas.

Volkov won six straight fights from 2016 through 2018, including a 4-0 record through his first four fights in the UFC. But since then he has alternated wins and losses, losing to Derrick Lewis and Curtis Blaydes and beating Greg Hardy and Walt Harris. The 6’7″ fighter’s endurance and durability make him dangerous in any fight he is in despite his lack of striking power, but he just hasn’t been able to put it all together and get over the top in the UFC yet.

Overeem has enjoyed an impressive career resurgence in recent years. After suffering back-to-back losses to Francis Ngannou and Curtis Blaydes, Overeem changed camps and started training with Blaydes to improve his wrestling game. The results have been outstanding as Overeem is 4-1 over his last five fights, with his only loss coming in a last-second knockout defeat to Jairzinho Rozenstruik back in December 2019. The 40-year-old is hoping to make one last run at the UFC Heavyweight Championship before calling it a career.

This should be a fascinating main event that could easily use all five of its allotted rounds. Both of these fighters are unorthodox heavyweights that can usually outlast their opponents, but that will be tough to do when they are facing another fighter with the same deep tank and patience as they have. Overeem has enjoyed success with playing defense early in his fights and waiting for his opponents to wear out in recent bouts; that won’t work against Volkov.

Volkov has shown improved takedown defense in recent fights and even picked up an impressive second-round technical knockout win over Walt Harris in his last fight to show off some improved finishing ability. The Russian is a more polished fighter and is a very reasonable pick to outlast and outpoint Overeem in this one, but there is simply way too much value on Overeem in what should be a long and competitive fight.
