Liverpool have relinquished first place in the Premier League following their 2-2 draw with Manchester United in Matchweek 32, allowing Arsenal to take top spot through goal difference.
Jurgen Klopp’s men took an early lead at Old Trafford after Luiz Diaz found himself unmarked at the back post and finished truly an athletic scissor kick.
After going the first 50 minutes without registering a shot, United levelled the score in emphatic style as Bruno Fernandes’ first-time hit from inside the centre circle caught Liverpool keeper Caoimhin Kelleher off his line.
The Red Devils took an unlikely lead in the 67th minute as young star Kobbie Mainoo produced an impressive curling effort from the edge of the box.
The final twist came in the 84th minute as Mohamed Salah netted from the penalty spot after United defender Aaron Wan-Bissaka had fouled Liverpool substitute Harvey Elliott.
Having dropped points in both matches against United this season, those results may end up costing Liverpool the Premier League title.
Speaking after the match, Klopp was clearly disappointed with the outcome.
“We should have won the game — that’s clear,” the Liverpool manager told reporters.
“We caused a few problems for ourselves. We controlled the game, scored first and should have had other goals.
“They had no shots in the first half. But we made a mistake and they used that immediately — it was well executed from Bruno.
“Then the stadium is coming and they score another screamer — a wonderful goal.
“But we found a way back in the game. We had big chances before they scored and after they scored.”
Earlier in the weekend, it was all good news for the other title challengers as both Manchester City and Arsenal earned comfortable victories on the road.
City secured an impressive 4-2 victory over Crystal Palace despite conceding an early goal, with Kevin De Bruyne, Rico Lewis and Erling Haaland all getting on the scoresheet.
Similarly, Mikel Arteta’s men were far too good for Brighton & Hove Albion, with Bukayo Saka, Kai Havertz and Leandro Trossard finding the back of the net.
With seven matches to go, Arsenal and Liverpool are level on 71 points with the Gunners holding a nine-goal advantage, while City are just behind on 70 points.
Up next, Manchester City host Luton Town, Liverpool host Crystal Palace, and Arsenal face a tricky match against Aston Villa.
City have now jumped into favouritism for the title at +150 with Bovada, while Arsenal (+175) and Liverpool (+225) are not far behind.
