Serie A 2021/22 Matchweek 29 predictions & best bets

Three of the top four teams on the Serie A table will be on the road this weekend as Juventus visits Sampdoria, Napoli visits Hellas Verona and Inter Milan visits Torino. Here’s a look at those three matchups in our top picks for Serie A Matchweek 29.

Sampdoria vs Juventus

Juventus (15-8-5) extended its current unbeaten streak to 14 straight games with a 1-0 win at home over Spezia on Sunday. The club is 9-5-0 since its last loss to Atalanta back on November 27 and has compiled a 4-3-0 record on the road over that stretch. Sampdoria (7-5-16) meanwhile lost to Udinese 2-1 on Saturday, falling to 2-0-7 over its last nine matches in the process.

While it’s true that Sampdoria has been playing well at home of late with clean sheet wins over Empoli and Sassuolo in its last two matches, neither of those clubs is anywhere close to as strong as Juventus is. Sampdoria has scored one goal or less in nine of its last 11 games and has been held to zero goals four times in its last eight matches. Facing an elite defensive squad like Juventus, a low-scoring draw isn’t out of the question, but the price on the road favorite is too enticing to pass up on here.

Hellas Verona vs Napoli

Napoli (17-6-5) saw its recent eight-match unbeaten streak of 5-3-0 come to an end last Saturday as the club suffered a 1-0 loss to AC Milan at home. Hellas Verona (11-8-9) continued its strong recent play by earning a point on the road in a 1-1 draw against Fiorentina, moving to 4-2-1 over its last seven matches. Verona now returns home, where it is 8-2-4 this season with a +12 goal differential and three straight wins.

This feels like a good spot to take a shot on the home underdog. A play on the spread at +0.5 would be a lot safer given how much more likely a draw is to an outright Verona win. But Hellas Verona is playing well at home and could catch Napoli in a letdown spot after last weekend’s disappointing home loss. These two clubs played to a 1-1 draw back in November; perhaps the change in venue puts Verona over the top this time around.

Torino vs Inter Milan

Inter Milan (17-7-3) let its stranglehold on first place atop the Serie A table loose with an underwhelming 1-3-2 run through February after the club had gone 8-0-0 over its previous eight games. Internazionale looked more like its old self on Friday in a 5-0 blowout win at home over Salernitana, snapping a four-game winless streak in style. Torino on the other hand is still mired in its own winless streak with an 0-3-3 record over its last six matches after playing to a 0-0 draw with Bologna on Saturday.

Each of Inter’s last three road games have ended in draws (including a 0-0 draw against lowly Genoa), so it isn’t too surprising that bettors aren’t showing a lot of faith in the club right now. Still, given how well they played against Salernitana, are we really going to pass on the chance to bet on Inter Milan at -140 against a Torino squad that hasn’t won since January 15? In a must win for Internazionale given the tight race at the top of the table, we’ll take our chances.
