Spieth firms for PGA Championship after British Open win

Jordan Spieth wins 2017 Open Championship

Jordan Spieth wins 2017 Open Championship
JORDAN Spieth ticked the Open Championship off his bucket list on Sunday with a stunning back-nine charge to defeat Matt Kuchar by three strokes.

The Texan had given up his overnight lead by the turn of the final round, but a trio of birdies and an eagle on the homeward stretch proved the difference as he claimed his third major title.

It was a performance that left many observers shaking their heads in disbelief.

With the Masters, the US Open and now the British Open under his belt, Spieth heads to next month’s US PGA Championship looking to become the youngest-ever male golfer to complete a career slam.

Online bookmaker WilliamHill.com has brought him into +750 to salute at Quail Hollow in Charlotte, North Carolina.

He shares that quote with Rory McIlroy, who recovered from a disappointing first round at the Open to finish tied for fourth.

Dustin Johnson wound up in a tie for 54th place after carding a seven-over 77 on the final day at Royal Birkdale, but he is well liked for the PGA at +800.

Jason Day heads the Australian charge at +1300, although it was Marc Leishman (+6600) who bolted home at the British to snatch a share of sixth at four under par.

Hideki Matsuyama and Jon Rahm were well back in the pack, yet both are rated +1800 chances for the final major of 2017.

There was a lot of love for Sergio Garcia this week, but an opening round of three-over 73 put the 2017 Masters champion out of the reckoning early.

He is paying +2500 to win the PGA, as is Olympic gold medallist Justin Rose.
