Titans @ Chiefs AFC Championship Game betting preview

The second-seeded Kansas City Chiefs will host the sixth-seeded Tennessee Titans in the AFC Championship Game this Sunday. This is a rematch of a game that took place early in the second half of the season in KC where the Titans beat the Chiefs 35-32 in a barnburner.

The Titans have had a more than impressive run to the title game, taking out the New England Patriots and the Baltimore Ravens on the road. They now have to win a third straight road game to advance to the Super Bowl.

Tennessee are in the title game because of their defense and the play of running back Derrick Henry. In the two playoff games the defense has given up only 25 points and Henry has rushed for 377 yards.

The Chiefs got a bye in the first round of the playoffs and looked sluggish early in their divisional clash with the Houston Texans, who led 24-0 partway through the second quarter. Then the Kansas City offense switched on, outscoring the Texans 51-7 for the remainder to book a spot in the title game.

To say Henry has carried the Tennessee offense in the playoffs would be a major understatement. After rushing for 182 yards against the Patriots he rushed for 195 yards at 6.5 yards per carry and had a touchdown pass in the 28-12 win over the Ravens last week. Henry was huge in the win over Kansas City earlier this season, gaining 188 yards at 8.8 yards per carry with two touchdowns.

Ryan Tannehill had a solid season since becoming the starter taking over for Marcus Mariota. On the season he passed for 2,742 yards with 22 touchdowns and only had six interceptions. However, with Henry in unstoppable form, Tannehill has not had to do much in the playoffs. In the two games he only had 29 pass attempts for 160 yards with three touchdowns and one interception, with two touchdowns and no picks in the Baltimore game.

Henry will take on a suspect Kansas City defense that only ranks 26th in the league. The Chiefs held the Texans to only 94 yards last week, but Houston had to abandon the run and go to the air as they chased a big deficit in the second half. The Titans cannot let that happen, as Henry is their big gun. If they get down big and have to air it out, it takes the ball out of his hands.

The Chiefs’ offense blew up after several mistakes had them in a 24-0 hole before roaring back in the win over the Texans. Patrick Mahomes was 23/35 for 351 yards with five touchdowns and was not picked off. Travis Kelse led Kansas City with 134 receiving yards and three touchdowns and Sammy Watkins had 76 receiving yards.

The Chiefs rushed for 118 yards in the win over Houston but did not have to run much as Mahomes was unstoppable after the first quarter. He led the team with 53 rushing yards and while Damien Williams only rushed for 47 yards at 3.9 yards per carry, he had two touchdowns and caught two passes with a score.

The Titans’ defense only gave up 12 points in the win over the Ravens but did give up 530 total yards. They forced three turnovers, which is what Kansas City have to avoid in this game.

Tennessee rank a respectable 12th in the NFL in run defense but only 24th in pass defense, which has to be a concern facing Mahomes. The Titans will need their pass rush to be solid like it was last week facing Lamar Jackson and the Ravens.

Titans @ Chiefs AFC Championship betting predictions

Kansas City Chiefs -7 at -111.11 with Bovada

The head-to-head trends all point to the Titans as the best NFL betting pick in this game. However, they are not the selection on this occasion. Henry may have a good game, but the Tennessee defense will not be able to contain Mahomes and the Chiefs will eliminate the mistakes that put them in a big hole against Houston. Mahomes will star as the Chiefs cover the spread and advance to Super Bowl LIV.
