Adrian Mannarino knocked Tommy Paul out of the Paris Masters on Monday, ending the American’s hopes of qualifying for the 2024 ATP Finals.
With Mannarino riding a seven-match losing streak at Masters 1000 events, tennis betting sites had Paul as short as -769.23 to win.
The Frenchman thrived in front of his home crowd, however, pealing off 19 winners and making the most of a tough forehand day for his opponent as he prevailed 6-3, 7-5.
Paul is now unable to accrue any more than 3,395 points in 2024, even if he wins one of next week’s ATP 250 events, meaning he cannot make the top-eight cutoff for the year-end finals.
With titles in Dallas, London and Stockholm, plus a career-best 45 match wins for the year, this is the closest the 27-year-old has come to reaching the ATP Finals.
Paul still has a chance of attending the event in 2024 as an alternate, depending on how results unfold over the next 10 days.
Another ATP Finals contender, Stefanos Tsitsipas, kept his own hopes alive with a come-from-behind victory over lucky loser Roberto Carballes Baena on Monday.
The Greek moves to 3,015 points in the Race to Turin after the 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 win, 705 points short of Andrey Rublev in eighth place.
To make the cut, the former world No.3 will need to win in Paris and rely on other results going his way.
“It’s not on my mind, honestly,” Tsitsipas said of his ATP Finals qualification chances.
“It’s not something that I think about.
“I’m a long way from qualifying. Deep inside I know that.
“It’s going to take a lot for me to qualify for that event.
“If I manage to up my tennis this entire week, then let’s see.”
Nags.bet has Tsitsipas at odds of +4000 to claim the title in Paris, with Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz sharing favouritism at +200 apiece.
