Vikings vs 49ers NFL betting preview

The Minnesota Vikings pulled off a big upset last week, beating the New Orleans Saints in the Big Easy. Can they do it again when they take on the San Francisco 49ers in the NFL Divisional Playoffs?

Kirk Cousins finally got the “can’t win the big game” monkey off his back in the Wild Card game as the Vikings beat the Saints 26-20 in overtime. They had lost their last two games of the regular season and they did not face the 49ers this season.

The 49ers are coming off a bye in the last round of the playoffs. In their last game of the regular season they beat the Seattle Seahawks 26-21 to secure the top seed in the NFC. San Francisco have a balanced team that ranks second in the NFL in points per game, overall defense, and rushing yards per game.

On the season the 49ers are 6-2 at home and the Vikings are 5-4 on the road. The home team has covered the spread in five of the last seven games between these teams.

The Vikings outgained the Saints 362 yards to 324, forced two turnovers and committed one, and held New Orleans to 97 rushing yards. While they had three sacks on the day, they pressured Drew Brees all game and held him to only 208 passing yards with an interception.

Cousins was 19/31 for 242 yards with a touchdown and no interceptions. In overtime he came up big, as his 43-yard pass to Adam Thielen set up the Vikings on the two-yard line and then on third and goal he threw the game-winning touchdown to Kyle Rudolph. Thielen had 129 receiving yards and while the Vikings won, receiver Stefon Diggs was hot on the sidelines after only having two catches on three targets for 19 yards.

Dalvin Cook came back healthy after missing two games with a shoulder injury and rushed for 94 yards with two touchdowns at 3.4 yards per carry. He also had three catches for 36 yards.

San Francisco’s defense ranks first in the league against the pass and 17th against the run. In their season finale win over Seattle they gave up 223 passing yards and 125 rushing yards.

The 49ers had nearly 400 yards of offense in their win over Seattle. While Jimmy Garoppolo did not pass for a touchdown, he did not get picked off and was 18/22 for 285 yards. Deebo Samuel and George Kittle, who led the 49ers with 1,053 receiving yards, combined for 188 receiving yards in the win.

The 49ers rushed for 128 yards with Raheem Mostert leading the way with 57 yards on 10 carries. Matt Breida rushed for 16 yards on four carries. The bye last week helped him, as he was hampered by an ankle injury at the end of the season.

The 49ers rank in the middle of the pack in terms of sacks allowed. Their offensive line will have a tall task in this game facing a solid Minnesota pass rush that played well in the win over the Saints.

Minnesota rank 15th in the league in pass defense and 13th in run defense.

Can Cousins step up again on the road in this game? Can the Vikings’ pass rush get to Jimmy G? Those are two big questions for this game. Cook is healthy and will get a lot of touches and Cousins will have another good game. The 49ers have a killer secondary, but their run defense is an issue. That will hurt them in this game. While San Francisco will move the ball and score, this will be a close game and the Vikings will, at least, cover the spread.
