WE already know come from the clouds story Leicester is the remarkable English Premier League champion, but that doesn’t take the gloss of a tense final round with plenty of ramifications across the league.
There’s the battle between bitter rivals Arsenal and Tottenham for second spot and Manchester City’s fight for a Champions League spot among others.
But three games featuring three marquee strikers will hold special significance.
Young Tottenham superstar Harry Kane ($1.50 with sportsbetcom.au) has all the aces at the moment, sitting at the top of the Premier League Golden Boot race with 25 goals.
but both Manchester City legend Sergio Aguero and Leicester City’s title winning hero Jamie Vardy are nipping at his heels with 24.
It makes for a final day shoot out for the ages.
Kane’s squad comes up against Newcastle, with a single point enough to nail down second spot, with two points and plenty of goal difference separating it and the Gunners in third.
Kane, though, said after City’s 2-2 draw with Arsenal last week that he was not fussed by the Golden Boot race and he would have rathered the Sky Blues won, thus eliminating the Gunners from second spot.
“I’d rather Man City had won to be honest, I’m not really fussed who scores,” Kane said.
“I’ll try to score (against Newcastle) and try to help my team.”
Coming off a double against Stoke, you wouldn’t put it past him to score plenty at St James’ Park.
The Foxes and Vardy ($6.50 with Sportsbet.com.au) are the feel good stories of the year.
Leicester was gone for all money last season, before digging itself out of the relegation zone and then going on the most amazing sporting run in the history of sport, all the way to the Premier League title.
Vardy, who has a chequered past, was a key feature of that title run, and, at one point, scored in a Premier League record 11 straight matches.
He scored in a 2-2 draw with West Ham, his first game for a month, after returning from a two match ban.
And he has form against Chelsea. He fired in the first goal in their December clash this term.
Expect at least a goal out of him to draw level with Kane.
Chelsea has very little to play for, while Leicester has the title sewn up, so we did contemplate the draw, but we’ve gone with Leicester.
Manager Claudio Ranieri returns to his old employees at Stamford Bridge, where he spent three underwhelming seasons as Chelsea manager.
He is shooting for his 100th Premier League victory and you feel the Foxes will want to end their championship season on a high. It is not often you will get $3.40 about them to win.
Vardy says he will be chasing the win, not goals.
“It’d be nice (to win the golden boot) but the main thing is for Leicester to keep trying to have that winning mentality, so we’ll go into Chelsea trying to win,” Vardy said.
“And if I don’t score and we win, that’s how it’s going to finish.”
The remarkable thing about Aguero ($3.30 with sportsbet.com.au) is that he has only played 27 games for the Sky Blues this term – Kane has played 37 and Vardy 35. He would have romped in the Golden Boot, were it not for injury.
As it stands, he still might win, with 10 and eight games less than his nearest rivals.
But he has what has become a tough challenge in front of him.
The Swans, all of a sudden, are the form side in the Premier League, with a pair of huge wins over West Ham and Liverpool. They have seven goals in their past two games and if the Sky Blues thought Champions League qualification was going to be a walk in a park, they are sadly mistaken.
The thing is, though, that the Swans have conceded at least one goal in each of their past four matches, so Aguero is primed here. The Argentinean gun announced himself as a star with a brace against the Swans way back in 2011 and it would be no surprise if he were to replicate the feat.
He has a ridiculous eight goals in his last six matches and is in prime form.
But the Swans will be dogged and will be keen to finish the season on a high note and give themselves something to build on in August, so we are picking this one as a draw.
We’ve thrown in the Arsenal game, because that one is set to rain goals. Villa have conceded more goals in the Premier League than any other team, while the Gunners will be desperate to fire in as many as possible as they chase Tottenham down. There are 13 goals separating the two – which is insurmountable – but Arsenal will want to win, and win well, in the hope that Spurs fail at Swansea.
We’re predicting a tie between Kane and Aguero for the Golden Boot, with Vardy a goal back, but all three players to score. One of the bookies should have a market on that.
