Winter Olympics Day 10 betting picks – February 14, 2022

Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics

Sweden’s Men’s Curling team and Canada’s Women’s Ice Hockey team will both be looking to remain undefeated when they face Russia and Switzerland respectively on Day 10 of the 2022 Winter Olympics. Here’s a look at those two Monday matchups and a gold medal pick in the Women’s Freestyle Skiing Aerials.

Women’s Hockey: Canada -7.5 (-125) vs Switzerland +7.5 (+105)

Everyone knew coming into the 2022 Winter Olympics that Canada and the United States would be massive favorites to clash in the gold medal game in Women’s Hockey. Nothing has changed in that regard, but Canada’s path to the semifinals has been a particularly dominant one. In addition to the 4-2 win over the United States, Canada has a few total blowout wins on its resume thus far including a 12-1 win over Switzerland, an 11-1 win over Finland and an 11-0 win over Sweden in the quarterfinals.

That win over Sweden is particularly important here, as it shows that the Canadians have no intention of letting up with a big lead in the knockout stage even though piling on goals no longer has any tie-breaking advantages. Switzerland is a clear tier below this deep Canadian team after losing by 11 goals the last time they met and by a score of 8-0 against the United States. All systems appear to be go for another Canada blowout win on Monday.

Men’s Curling: Sweden (-500) vs Russia (+300)

Sweden came into Beijing as the third favorite to win gold in Men’s Curling, behind Canada and Great Britain. But they’ve been the best team at these Olympic Games thus far with a 5-0 start that includes 7-4 wins over both Canada and the United States. Russia, meanwhile, has exceeded expectations with a 3-2 record so far, though their wins have come against weaker competition in China, Denmark and Italy. The squad lost to Switzerland 6-3 and to the United States 6-5.

There isn’t much money to be made betting on Sweden on the moneyline here as massive -500 favorites, and the spread of -3.5 points isn’t very tempting considering four of Sweden’s five wins have been by three points or less. The value in this matchup is on the UNDER 12.5 points. Both of Russia’s games against competitive opponents have fallen under that total, as have all five of Sweden’s draws so far. Sweden has had the best defense in Beijing, allowing only 3.8 points per game; look for that trend to continue in another low-scoring win.

Freestyle Skiing: Women’s Aerials

China’s Xu Mengtao is a +185 favorite to win gold in this event, a fair line given that she is arguably the most talented skier in the competition. With that said, she has never claimed gold in Aerials in her previous three Olympics appearances, with a sixth-place finish in 2010, a silver medal in 2014 and a ninth-place finish in 2018. She also has only one World Championships gold medal, which came all the way back in 2013. There’s better value elsewhere on the board.

We’re going to take a shot on Australia’s Laura Peel to win this event at +400 to do so. Peel has two World Championship golds in Aerials under her belt, winning one in Kreischberg in 2015 and one in Albany in 2021. She also has four World Cup wins since 2020, doubling Mengtao’s wins over that span of time. Mengtao’s best effort may win gold, but anything short opens the door for Peel to take it.
