Young Boys vs. Manchester United Champions League goal-scoring tips

Manchester United’s first outing of the 2018/19 UEFA Champions League campaign will see them on the road against Young Boys on Wednesday night.

The Red devils will be hopeful of emerging from the Swiss capital with maximum points in their Group H opener, so much for a fine start as it is for gaining headway in a group that has Spanish side Valencia and Serie A champions Juventus.

Jose Mouirnho’s charges warmed up for their midweek European encounter with a 2-1 win over Watford last Saturday in the Premier League.

Javi Gracia’s side had every reason to beam with confidence ahead of the encounter, as they had won all four of their opening Premier League matches, but it was the visitors that went ahead in the 34th minute through Romelu Lukaku.

Ashley Young had his free kick cleared but the England international had a second bite at the cherry, darting a dangerous cross that found Lukaku who steered it home with the faintest of touches with his chest.

The Hornets seemed to labor getting past United and were soon punished with a second goal in quick succession, with Chris Smalling finding the breakthrough this time round. The 28-year old defender took a touch with his chest before stabbing it in the back of the net after some neat work by Marouane Fellaini who imposingly headed down from an Ashley Young corner.

Watford however didn’t register a fine start to the campaign by wallowing in self pity, and their fighting spirit was highlighted when they salvaged a goal back midway through the second half through Andre Gray.

The English striker, seemingly unmarked in acres of space, connected with Abdoulaye Doucoure’s cut back across the face of goal before firing a first-time volley beyond the hands of David De Gea.

There was drama in the closing moments of the game as Nemanja Matic was sent off after the Serbian was adjudged to have committed a second bookable offence, but that did not deter United from their course as they hanged on to emerged from Vicarage Road with maximum points. David De Gea however deserves all the props for rescuing the points having made an athletic save in the final seconds of the game.

Although the defeat was a sting in the tail of Watford, the match was always going to be an acid test for Jose Mourinho; one that the Portuguese once again used to silence his naysayers by duly delivering when it matters the most.

Young Boys on the other hand prepared for Manchester United’s visit with a 3-2 victory over FC Schaffhausen in the Round of 32 of the Swiss Cup; Mohamed Ali Camara ludicrously scoring the winner in the 120th minute.

Ander Herrera will have to pass a late fitness test after the Spaniard missed the trip to Watford due to an injury sustained in training over the week, but United will certainly welcome the return of Luke Shaw. The left-back will slot back into the starting line-up after missing the weekend win due to a concussion sustained while on international duty with the Three Lions.

Nemanja Matic and Marcus Rashford similarly look to have guaranteed their places in the starting eleven as they both serve red card suspensions in the Premier League, but the Argentine duo of Sergio Romero and Marcos Rojo look poised to continue with their injury spell on the sidelines.

Young Boys vs. Manchester United betting predictions

Manchester United’s win at Vicarage Road was a timely shot in the arm given their lethargic start to the Premier League campaign. The trip to Bern is by all accounts a must win for the Red devils, as their Group H opener will be followed by an Old Trafford tie with Valencia before successive matches with Italian powerhouse Juventus.
