Connor McDavid wins fourth Ted Lindsay award, Joins NHL legends Gretzky and Lemieux

Connor McDavid, the forward for the Edmonton Oilers, has been honoured with the prestigious Ted Lindsay Award as the “most outstanding player in the NHL” during the 2022-23 NHL awards; this remarkable achievement marks his fourth win of the award, having previously received it in the 2016-17, 2017-18, and 2020-21 seasons, and now he joins the ranks of NHL legends Wayne Gretzky, who won it five times, and Mario Lemieux, who also won it four times.

Throughout this past year, McDavid’s performance on the ice has undeniably been the best of his NHL career; whether you witnessed his brilliance on television or had the privilege of watching him live in your team’s home arena, McDavid’s impact was undeniable, playing in all 82 regular season games, netting an impressive 64 goals and tallying 153 points, and his outstanding performance earned him his third Art Ross Trophy for leading the league in scoring and propelled the Oilers to a second-place finish in the Pacific Division.

Although the Oilers didn’t achieve playoff success, their captain continued to shine, scoring an additional eight goals and 20 points across 12 games in the team’s three playoff series, and this phenomenal season is only the beginning of McDavid’s triumphs, as he also secured his first Maurice “Rocket” Richard Trophy, becoming the first player from the Oilers franchise to win the award since its introduction in 1999, and he topped the league in power-play points with 71 and led all forwards in time on ice, averaging 22 minutes and 23 seconds per game, among many other impressive feats in his NHL career.

McDavid emerged as the winner of the Ted Lindsay Award, triumphing over first-time finalists David Pastrnak, a forward from the Boston Bruins, and Erik Karlsson, a defencemen from the San Jose Sharks; Karlsson, who was also nominated for the Norris Trophy as the league’s top defenceman, showcased his skills by scoring 25 goals and 101 points this season, becoming the sixth defenceman in NHL history to reach 100 points and setting a new NHL record by contributing to 43.35 percent of the Sharks’ goals (101 out of 233), surpassing Bobby Orr’s previous record of 43.32 percent in the 1969-70 season.

Pastrnak, finishing second in scoring behind McDavid, registered an impressive 61 goals and ranked third in points, with 113, just behind McDavid’s teammate, Leon Draisaitl, and he played a pivotal role in 37.5 percent of Boston’s 301 goals this season and led the league with 407 shots, while also scoring the most game-winning goals throughout the season and contributing to the Bruins’ record-setting campaign.
