Borussia Dortmund top Champions League table after Celtic rout

Borussia Dortmund demolished Scottish Premiership holders Celtic 7-1 in UEFA Champions League action on Tuesday night at Signal Iduna Park.

German forward Karim Adeyemi scored a first-half hat-trick, while Serhou Guirassy netted a brace in the rampant performance.

Emre Can and Felix Nmecha scored a goal apiece for the hosts, with the Scots finding their consolation through Japanese forward Daizen Maeda.

Following their 3-0 win over Belgian side Club Brugge in the opening week, Tuesday’s resounding victory took Dortmund top of the table on six points, ahead of Ligue 1 outfit Stade Brestois and Bundesliga champions Bayer Leverkusen on goal difference.

Speaking after the defeat, Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers admitted his charges were punished for every mistake.

“We are really disappointed with the result and performance,” Rodgers said.

“I don’t think I’ve been involved in a game where every mistake we made got punished. That’s the level. We could’ve been better with the ball.”

“Going down early spooked us a little bit and we didn’t play with the same confidence. Second half, the guys showed great spirit and we had more possession of the ball, took more risks to create.

“Ultimately, we were beaten by the better team.”

Dortmund turn their attention to the Bundesliga this weekend, with online bookmakers installing them as +117 favourites against hosts Union Berlin (+242).
