UCL: Atletico Madrid suffer humiliating defeat against Lille

Soccer ball

It was heartache for Atletico Madrid in the Champions League as they suffered a shock 3-1 defeat to Ligue 1 side LOSC Lille in the Spanish capital on Wednesday night.

Despite taking the lead in the eighth minute through Argentine forward Julian Alvarez, Atletico fell apart after the break when substitute Edon Zhegrova equalised for the visitors.

Canadian forward Jonathan David converted from the spot in the 74th minute after Lille were awarded a controversial penalty, then put the result beyond doubt with a second goal in the closing moments of the game.

A second consecutive Champions League win propelled Lille to 15th on the table with six points, while Atleti are 27th out of a possible 36 after back-to-back defeats.

Speaking after the match, Atletico boss Diego Simeone was openly disappointed with Lille’s penalty.

“There’s nothing to discuss, guys,” he said.

“It’s like when someone says penalty; well, explain to me why. Was it handball? No. Was it a push by Koke? No.”

“Honestly, I hope we can see something. I hope that UEFA or whoever can confirm that the referee was right and VAR did not assist him because the referee correctly called it a penalty.”

“But when you get a penalty like that, I just hope that one day these mistakes will go in our favor, as they can happen and are part of football.”

Atleti will be hoping to bounce back in La Liga this Sunday, with online bookmakers paying +136 for the Madrid outfit to defeat Real Betis (+220).
