MI smash Chennai Super Kings by nine wickets in IPL 2025. Rohit and Suryakumar combine for 114* stand to keep Mumbai in finals hunt.
Mumbai Indians made a bold statement on Sunday at Wankhede Stadium, steamrolling Chennai Super Kings by nine wickets to move into 2025 IPL title contention—while effectively crushing CSK’s playoff hopes.
Batting first, Chennai labored early against a sharp Mumbai attack. Openers Shaik Rasheed (19 off 20) and Rachin Ravindra (5 off 9) struggled to get going, continuing CSK’s season-long powerplay woes. The scoreboard crawled to just 16 runs after three overs before Ravindra was dismissed.
Teenager Ayush Mhatre (32 off 15) injected much-needed urgency through the middle overs, while veteran all-rounders Ravindra Jadeja (53* off 35) and Shivam Dube (50 off 32) steadied the ship with a handy stand.
But CSK’s finish fizzled. MS Dhoni (4 off 6) and Jamie Overton (4* off 3) couldn’t capitalize in the death overs, with Chennai finishing at 176/5—a total that looked below par at a venue known for high-scoring chases.
Live betting odds swung heavily in favor of Mumbai at the change of innings, and they delivered on cue.
Ryan Rickelton (24 off 19) and Rohit Sharma (76* off 45) got the hosts off to a flyer, putting on 63 for the first wicket at a rapid rate. But it was the arrival of Suryakumar Yadav that turned the match into a rout. SKY smashed 68* off just 30 balls, partnering with Rohit for an unbeaten 114-run stand that sealed victory with 26 balls to spare.
“The way Rohit and Suryakumar bat, it is a relief from outside,” said MI skipper Hardik Pandya post-match. “You don’t have to worry about Rohit’s form. We knew when he comes good, the opposition will be out. SKY complemented him perfectly. We’ve been sticking to the basics—percentage cricket, not trying magical stuff.”
The emphatic win vaulted Mumbai into sixth on the IPL ladder and, crucially, lifted their net run rate to +0.483—potentially vital in the playoff race.
Following the result, IPL sportsbooks have shortened Mumbai’s title odds to +550, right alongside fellow contenders Punjab Kings and Gujarat Titans. Only Royal Challengers Bengaluru, at +500, sit shorter in the market.
With form, firepower, and momentum on their side, the five-time champs are shaping up as genuine threats once again.
