Tiger’s Masters fairytale delivers $1million pay-out for true believer

Tiger Woods

Tiger Woods

IT’S the stuff of golfing dreams.

Tiger Woods, back from oblivion, winning the US Masters when no one gave him a real chance.

Well, almost no one.

One punter will have celebrated harder than the golfing great himself after netting $US1 million in winnings in the biggest pay-out in the history of golf wagering.

You read that right.

An American punter, taking advantage of the new sports betting legislation in the country, placed US$85,000 on Woods to win The Masters at +1300 with William Hill US, just two days before a club was swung in anger at Augusta.

Woods, who ultimately won the tournament by one shot, started out solidly on the first two days before making his move up the leaderboard on day 3. The final day was as dramatic as they come when the champ, chasing his first US Masters Green Jacket since 2005 and his 15th major overall, birdied at the 15th and 16th hole, taking the lead in front of an excited crowd.

As you can imagine, William Hill is bleeding.

William Hill’s US director of trading, Nick Bogdanovich, summed up the feeling of the wagering giant.

“It’s great to see Tiger back. It’s a painful day for William Hill — our biggest golf loss ever — but a great day for golf,” Bogdanovich said.

The questions about the wager are as interesting as the bet itself and the winner has remained anonymous.

Who could afford to lay $85,000 on a +1300 shot?

Was it one person? A betting syndicate?

Clearly, whoever has won the money may already have a fair chunk of it to throw around.

We can only applaud the bravery and foresight, to predict when and where the former world number one would return to the top of the game.

Woods, dipping as lows as 1,199th in the game’s rankings in 2017, has overcome debilitating back injuries that stopped him from playing the game and has won back public support after a decade of controversy and scandal away from the greens.

Can the 43-year-old do it again at the US Open?

The bookmakers believe Woods’ form could be sustained throughout 2019 and have installed Tiger as the +900 favourite.
