Governor Kim Reynolds signed a gambling reform bill on Monday that sees Iowa become the ninth US state to legalise sports betting.

The new legislation allows residents over 21 years of age to gamble on sporting events at any of the Hawkeye State’s 19 licensed casinos.

Punters can gamble online if they first visit a land-based casino to prove their age and identity, while daily fantasy sports sites such as DraftKings and FanDuel are now 100 per cent legal.

“This just brings people out of the shadows and gives them a regulated environment,” Senator Roby Smith told reporters after Iowa lawmakers voted 67-31 in favour of the bill last month.

Seven other states have leglised gambling on sports since the US Supreme Court struck down the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA) last May.

Delaware and New Jersey led the charge, with Mississippi, New Mexico, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island and West Virginia hot on their heels.

Tennessee is close to joining them, while Indiana, Louisiana and Maine are also well on the way toward legalisation.
