2019 French Open 3rd round betting tips – Friday, May 31

The singles draws are starting to open up a little as we approach the middle weekend of the 2019 French Open.

Marin Cilic wound up on the wrong end of a five-set classic with Grigor Dimitrov on Wednesday, while Alex de Minaur was swept aside by the unseeded Pablo Carreno Busta.

Kiki Bertens is the latest casualty in the women’s event, with the Dutch star forced to retire hurt only a few games into her first set against Viktoria Kuzmova.

Simona Halep had a minor scare when she dropped the second set against Australia’s Ajla Tomljanovic, but the defending champion responded with an emphatic 6-1 win in the third.

The contenders are all set to feature in the third round as we look at the best bets and accumulator selections for Friday’s action at Roland Garros.

These two have an even head-to-head record at first glance, but it is a different story when you narrow it down to major tournaments. Stan is 3-0 up in the grand slams, including wins in Melbourne and New York last year, so the 2015 French Open champ looks a very good bet to improve on that tally.

While Carreno Busta breezed through the second round, Paire needed the full five sets to dislodge Pierre-Hugues Herbert in an all-French affair. Pablo has fresher legs and far better credentials at this level, having reached the quarter-finals at Roland Garros back in 2017.

It is no surprise that tennis bookies refuse to split these two, but the value is with Muguruza. That’s because Svitolina is a chronic underperformer at the grand slams who, despite a 5-3 head-to-head advantage, will fall short against an opponent that always saves her best for the big events.

Neither of these players were especially impressive in this year’s lead-up events, with both going straight out at Rome. Odds, form and ranking suggest Sevastova should win this, but she has a poor record on clay, while Mertens has shown great promise in the majors over the past year or so.
