Wolverhampton Wanderers vs Liverpool EPL betting preview

Champions-in-waiting Liverpool will be confident of extending their lead at the top of the English Premier League table when they meet Wolverhampton Wanderers at the Molineux Stadium on Thursday night.

Jurgen Klopp’s side heads into Wolverhampton at the summit of the league on 64 points – a comfortable 13 points ahead of second-placed Manchester City, and a further three points in front of Leicester City in third.

Having lost the title to Manchester City last season by a single point, the Reds have blitzed the competition this time around. With 21 wins from 22 games, the Merseyside giants appear destined to claim their first-ever EPL title and their first league crown in 30 years.

That they are also the reigning European champions, with two trophies already secured this campaign, has given Liverpool a new level confidence in the tougher fixtures. Such was the case when Liverpool squeezed out a 1-0 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers when they met at the tail end of December.

Wolves have also impressed in their own right. Coming into the Premier League last season as winners of the Championship having spent six years away from top flight football, they bulldozed their way into the top half of the table and qualified for the UEFA Europa League, which they are still well in contention for.

Frustrating the top sides in the Premier League has been Wolverhampton’s forte. Nuno Espírito Santo’s side sit sixth in the EPL standings, level on points with fifth-placed Manchester United and six points behind Chelsea in fourth.

For all of Wolverhampton’s achievements in the past few years, the gap between these two sides is hard to ignore. Wolves are a whopping 30 points adrift of Liverpool, who still have two games in hand on the competition ahead of Thursday’s trip to the West Midlands.

Wolverhampton Wanderers team news

Wolves are without the services of left wing-back Ruben Vinagre, who suffered a hamstring during their recent 1-0 loss to Manchester United in the FA Cup.

Portuguese forward Diogo Jota could be back in the reckoning having recovered from a calf injury, while defender Willy Boly will also be available for selection having been sidelined with a serious ankle injury since October.

Liverpool team news

Croatian defender Dejan Lovren has returned to full training this week, although it may be a few weeks yet until he returns to the matchday squad.

Midfielder Naby Keita is sidelined with a groin injury, James Milner has a thigh problem and Nathaniel Clyne is still out with a long-term knee injury.

The return of influential first-teamers Joel Matip and Fabinho against Manchester United was certainly a boost for Jurgen Klopp, with both a chance to start at Wolverhampton.

Mohamed Salah is a without question a pivotal part of Liverpool’s stellar attacking cast.

Last season’s EPL Golden Boot winner leads the club’s scoring charts with 15 goals in all competitions, which puts him two strikes ahead of Sadio Mane.

Having found the back of the net in spectacular fashion in Liverpool’s 2-0 win over Manchester United last weekend, the 27-year-old Egyptian forward will be eager to add to his tally at the Molineux.

Wolves vs Liverpool EPL betting predictions

Wolverhampton Wanderers lick their lips at the prospect of meeting Liverpool in cup competitions, having knocked the Reds out of the FA Cup in two of the last three seasons.

It is a different story in the league, however, as the Reds have won each of their last six Premier League meetings with Wolves.

Yet to taste defeat this season, it is unlikely that Jurgen Klopp’s side will drop any points in what could be a low-scoring contest.
