December was a busy month for Indiana sportsbooks as operators combined to report a solid $463.0 million betting handle.
The figure is the second-best for the state since the launch of regulated sports betting in September 2019, falling short of November’s record $463.7 million by a slight margin of $669,126. However, when compared to $313.0 million reported in the same period in 2020, the value of bets staked by Hoosiers in December was up by 47.9% year-on-year.
When it comes to revenue, Indiana licensees held $25.8 million of the total bets handled, translating to a win rate of 5.57%. The hold posted in December was a decrease of 45.9% from the record $47.7 million won in the month prior, but it was 6.2% higher than the $24.3 million reported in December 2020.
The revenue report further shows that the state of Indiana collected $2.4 million in sports betting taxes from operators in December, down by 46.7% from the $4.5 million collected in November.
Mobile sportsbooks generate over 91% of Indiana’s handle
According to the latest revenue numbers posted by the Indiana Gaming Commission (IGC), digital sportsbooks took in $422.8 million in bets for the month of December, which was 91.3% of the state’s overall betting handle.
Despite the impressive performance, the internet handle for December was down by 1.69% from the $430.1 million reported by online licensees in the month prior.
The sport that generated the most action in the month was basketball, thanks to a busy NBA schedule as well as a full month of college basketball. According to the IGC report, Hoosiers wagered $148.5 million on the sport in December, beating November’s handle of $132.1 million by 12.4%.
Football betting brought in $141.8 million in handle, up by 4.0% from the $136.3 million wagered in the previous month. Parlay cards generated the third-highest handle at $117.3 million, down from $120.0 million in November.
The handle for baseball dropped from $1.4 million in November to $54,132 in December, while other sports accounted for $52.8 million of sports wagers booked in the state during the month.
The figures for December pushed the state’s betting handle for the year 2021 to $3.8 billion, while the total revenue generated by the industry in the year tallied $306 million. Indiana also hit the $6 billion handle benchmark in December, which makes it the fifth state to achieve the feat after New Jersey, Nevada, Illinois, and Pennsylvania.
