Aaron Nola and the Phillies travel to Miami, Gerrit Cole and the Yankees host Chris Sale and the Red Sox, and Logan Webb faces the Brewers in San Francisco on Sunday in Major League Baseball (MLB). Here are the best bets on MLB games scheduled for Sunday, July 17th, starting at 12:05 p.m. Eastern.
Milwaukee Brewers @ San Francisco Giants
Logan Webb probably should be an All-Star. He’s 8-3, which is the 13th-best record in baseball. His 2.82 ERA is 16th overall, and his 1.11 WHIP is 24th in MLB. He’s been especially good against Milwaukee, albeit in a small sample size. In 37 plate appearances, the Brewers have managed just seven hits and two walks for a .233 on-base percentage against Webb. Their team OPS against him is .492.
Going for Milwaukee will be Jason Alexander, who is 2-1 with a 4.73 ERA and 1.68 WHIP this season. He’s made just seven starts, pitching 40 innings and striking out just 18 batters. That doesn’t bode well for the Brewers, as the Giants have scored the fourth-most runs in MLB (145) and have the third-best team OPS (.734).
Alexander will have unfamiliarity working for him the first time through the lineup, but don’t expect that advantage to last long. Take San Francisco in the first five innings and on the moneyline. Stay away from betting the spread because the Brewers have a considerably better bullpen. Brewers relievers have the 14th-ranked WHIP in MLB, while San Francisco’s bullpen ranks 24th. Consider parlaying those bets with…
San Francisco Giants to win
Boston Red Sox @ New York Yankees
In the biggest rivalry in baseball, Gerrit Cole will battle Chris Sale in a marquee matchup prior to the All-Star break. Cole will be in Los Angeles as a member of the American League All-Star pitching staff, and deservingly so. He’s 8-2 with a 3.05 ERA and 1.01 WHIP this season. Against Boston, however, he’s allowed a .718 OPS over 172 at-bats. Boston batters have collected 41 hits, including 10 doubles, a triple, and 11 homers.
Rafael Devers is seven-for-23 with six dingers against Cole, so you might want to bet on him to have multiple total bases and maybe even a homerun on Sunday. J.D. Martinez is seven-for-29 with three doubles and two dingers, so consider taking him to have multiple total bases as well.
Chris Sale was outstanding in his return against Tampa Bay, albeit against the 23rd-ranked offense in baseball based on team OPS (.668). He’ll have to contend with the second-best offense in baseball on Sunday. The Yankees have a .776 team OPS this season, which is just a point lower than their OPS against Sale. In 155 at-bats, New York batters have 39 hits, including nine homers and five doubles. Josh Donaldson has five of those homers and is 10p-for-35 against Sale. Consider placing a player prop bet on him to have multiple total bases and maybe even a homer on Sunday. DJ LeMahieu is also six-for-nine with a double and the other three dingers, so take him to have multiple total bases, too.
New York’s relievers have the fourth-best WHIP in baseball compared to Boston’s 13th-ranked WHIP, so take New York in the first five innings and on the moneyline. Parlaying New York and San Francisco on the moneyline pays +142. Turn your moneyline parlay into a trifecta by adding…
New York Yankees to win
Philadelphia Phillies @ Miami Marlins
Aaron Nola might be another All-Star snub. His 5-7 record is not indicative of his outstanding season. His 3.35 ERA ranks 30th, his 127 strikeouts is seventh overall, and his 0.93 WHIP is sixth-best in all of baseball. Against Miami, he’s been stifling. In 124 plate appearances, the Marlins have just nine walks and 29 hits, with only four going for extra bases. That’s a .221 on-base percentage and .403 OPS against Nola.
Miami counters with Trevor Rogers, who is 4-8 with a 5.42 ERA and 1.58 WHIP. The Phillies have not been kind to him, going 18-for-61 with four doubles and three dingers. Philadelphia batters have also walked a dozen times. It all adds up to a .409 on-base percentage and .798 OPS against Rogers. Rhys Hoskins is seven-of-14 with a double and three dingers, so bet on him to have multiple total bases and maybe a homer on Sunday.
Both bullpens are equally bad, with Miami’s relievers logging the 20th-ranked WHIP and Philly’s relievers posting the 21st-ranked WHIP. Philadelphia has a considerably better offense (16th-ranked OPS vs. Miami’s 25th ranked OPS). Take the Phillies in the first five innings and on the moneyline. Parlaying Philadelphia, New York, and San Francisco on the moneyline pays +299.
Philadelphia Phillies to win
