Major League Baseball betting

BASEBALL is one of the most popular sports to bet on in the world, with competitions all over the planet pitting elite talent against each other in a sport known as America’s favourite pastime.

Invented by civil war hero Abner Doubleday in Cooperstown, New York, the first baseball origins reportedly date back to 1839.
The one thing that makes baseball so popular and has allowed the American public to resound with it so closely is the fact that it can be played by people of all shapes and sizes. The average Joe can pick up a bat, or ping a ball down and do it at the highest level.

Major League Baseball MLB Online Betting

You only have to look at Major League Baseball legend Babe Ruth, a portly character in his prime, to see that anyone can give this game a crack, and do it very well.

From humble beginnings, the sport grew into the first professional league in 1871, but it took around 30 years for the sport to really catch on, with teams in just about every major city in the country’s east fighting for pennants available in a division of two leagues, the National and American leagues, which both still stand today.

While it was popular, it never really took off until the great Ruth strode up to the plate.

Ruth captured the imagination of the American public, slugging more home runs than any other man in history at the time and leading the New York Yankees to several World Series titles.

By 1950, there was a push to expand the game west and several other teams were born through baseball expansion.

Today, millions of people all over the world tune in to watch and bet on the sport, with thousands of betting markets available.
The World Series is watched by an average of 36 million viewers in America alone, a remarkable figure – more than 10 per cent of the population tuning in at any one time.

The baseball craze has not quite become a world game, but the Japanese are absolutely crazy for it and it would possess the biggest professional competition outside the USA, with several Japanese players making the cross to the MLB.

The sport is also big in South America, with Cuba and also the Caribbean nations enjoying a huge love affair with the sport.

Tips for placing a winning bet?

Knowing the rules is a good start.

Baseball is a complex sport to begin with and betting on it without knowing the rules can be disastrous.

Having your head around all the teams and players is also a must if you want your baseball betting experience to be productive.

Doing your research is vital. Almost more than any other sport. You need to know who is pitching in the game your betting on.

Baseball teams can use up to four or five starting pitchers throughout their season, in order to preserve their best players and will also use a bull pen of several mid and closer pitchers to relieve their starters.

When betting with the best USA betting sites you need to know who will be on the mound before you bet. We can’t stress that enough.

Then you can look into their records. How have they gone recently? What about against the team they are playing?

You want to do your research into the team, what its record is like against the opponent and how it has been tuning up recently.

History matters in baseball and so do the stats.

Make sure you know who will be at the plate as well. You don’t want to get caught out by an injury to a star player after you’ve placed your bet on your favourite team to win a game.

If you are having a crack at the World Series or other futures markets, you will also want to make sure you have kept an eye on all the off season moves. Where have the players gone and which teams project to have improved their teams enough to compete for the coveted World Series title?

Popular baseball betting markets

Head to head or money line: This is the most simple bet in baseball. All you have to do is predict who will win the game, place your bet and then ride your team home. Just remember that games can last several hours, so if you’re looking for correct returns, you might want to focus on other markets.

Note: Ladbrokes.com.au and other bookmakers have begun to adopt a new policy on head-to-head betting. Previously, a bet would be informed by the starting pitcher and cancelled if that pitcher failed to play. Now the head-to-head bet is not contingent on the starting pitcher and the bet will continue, regardless of a late starting pitcher change.

  • Total home runs
With this bet type, you need to predict how many home runs will be hit in the match between the two teams. The bookie earmarks a figure and then you have to decide whether it will be over or under that number. For example, if the bookie’s figure is 6.5 home runs, the total match score has to be seven or more for you to collect the overs, or six or less for the unders.
  • Handicap or run line
The handicapper strikes. The bookie will designate a handicap to the favourite in the game and a head start for the outsider. You then have to decide how the match turns out. The line can tend to be around 1.5 either way, given that baseball is traditionally a low scoring sport. So the favourite will be given a -1.5, with the outsider a +1.5. That means if the outsider loses by one run, you will still win. Conversely, the favourite not only needs to win, but to win by two or more runs for your bet to get home.
  • Parlays or multi bets
Sometimes the head to head odds just don’t cut it. If you’re a real pro – or simply think you can clean up with a hail mary, the parlay bet is for you. This type of betting increases the odds, but reduces your chances of winning, by involving two or more results getting home for your bet to salute. Multis tend the be capped at 12 legs, but, if you can get one of those home, you’ll probably be able to quit work, as the odds for each result multiply into each other to form a huge dividend.
  • Futures
Who will win the World Series? MVP? Cy Young? This is where punters can place their stakes and let it sit and wait. You will have to sit on these bets for a long time – unless you place them just before the release of the winner, but it is worth it if you know your stars. More details on these awards below.

Most Valuable Player, Cy Young and Rookie of the Year, Manager of the Year, Golden Glove awards

Baseball’s MVP is the most coveted individual award in the sport. It is awarded to the best player in each league. So there are two MVPs each year and they are recognised as standing at the top of the heap when it comes to baseball’s finest.

Similar to the MVP, the Cy Young Award is given to the best pitchers in each league. Instigated in 1956, the award honours superstar pitcher Cy Young, who died in 1955, and is voted on by members of the Baseball Writers’ Association of America.

A player from each league is also awarded the Rookie of the Year and this recognises the best first year player in the particular season. Some of the best players in baseball’s history have won this award.

The best manager in each league is awarded the Manager of the Year. It usually goes to the teams with the best record, but not always.

Fielders aren’t forgotten in the Major Leagues, with 18 golden gloves – nine in each of the two leagues – awarded to the best fielders at each position. The managers and coaches of each league vote for this award, but they are not allowed to select their own player.

The first team to four wins is crowned champion and awarded the Commissioner’s Trophy.

It pits the American League (AL) champion up against the National League (NL) champion.

This used to be decided by season record, with the team in each league with best win – loss ratio going straight to the World Series, but that all changed in 1969 when the two leagues each began running championship series’.

The San Francisco Giants are the current World Series champions, after defeating the Kansas City Royals four games to three in 2014, but the undeniable legendary team is the New York Yankees.

The fabled boys from New York have played in an amazing 40 out of the 109 World Series staged, winning 27 of those.

The St Louis Cardinals are the only other team to hold double figure World Series’ crowns, having played in 19 and won 11.

Philadelphia/Kansas City/Oakland Athletics (there’s always plenty of franchise movement in the US) are the next best, with 14 appearances and nine wins, but, when you have that kind of relocation, it takes away some of the lustre.

The Boston Red Sox won the first ever World Series in 1903 and have played in 12 and won eight of those, sharing that number with the New York/San Francisco Giants (who made it 20 times).

It’s a fantastic tournament to watch and it is even more fun to spice it up with a little wager.

There are hundreds of betting options on both the series and individual games and it is one of the biggest money spinners for bookmakers each year.

You’ll find every good online bookmaker we recommend has a market for the World Series, just about all year round.

Here we take a look at some of the popular betting markets on the World Series and provide a little guide to help you pick the market that is right for you.

Bet on who will win the World Series

Bread and butter stuff here. All you have to do is pick the team you think will be crowned the winner of the World Series.

Think that’s easy? There are 30 teams in the MLB, 15 in the National league and 15 in the American League. That means there are 30 teams that could potentially win the crown at the start of the season.
Before the season starts is when you’ll usually find the best odds, although, when one of the traditionally strong teams makes some major moves in the off season, they will certainly be shorter.

Odds fluctuate throughout the season as teams perform – or don’t – and win loss records begin to shape.

You can bet on this market almost all year round. Some betting companies put up markets for next season’s World Series almost the moment the final game is played and the current title is won.

Pro punters will key in on these bets and add to them as the season takes shape. But it’s also fun to have a flutter on your favourite team and ride their ups and downs throughout the season.

Obviously, the time when it is easiest to pick the winner is right before the first game of the World Series. There’s only two teams in it, so you have a 50 – 50 chance of picking the winner.

Good luck.

How do you wager on the two teams that will make the World Series?

This is where it gets tougher.

There are plenty of combinations here, but basically you have to decide which two teams will play off for the World Series.

The quinella – So which team from the American League and which team from the National League will make it.

That means you have to be across both leagues, know how the teams are performing, keep track of records and know which teams have players who are big game performers.

Or you can make it a pie in the sky pick and go with your gut. That can be effective with these types of futures bets where just about anything can happen.

So you might think the superb Detroit Tigers are a sure thing to make it through the American League. But maybe the San Francisco Giants can go back to back and upset some of the more favoured teams in the National League.

Make your two selections, find them with your online sportsbook and place your bets.

If those two teams end up in the Fall Classic, you win.

Picking the exact result in the World Series

You want tougher?

You got it. Here you have to not only pick the winner of the World Series, but also what the score across the series will be.

The series can go to seven games, but teams only have to win four. So it can be 4-0, 4-1, 4-2 or 4-3.

These markets go up once the two teams set to play off against each other in the World Series are decided.

So, taking the example of Detroit and San Francisco, the Tigers are heavy favourites.

So you snap them up to win, and do it easy 4-1. You’ll get in the vicinity of $3-$5 for something like that. The odds will change, depending on how close the two teams are considered to be.

Placing a bet on who will win the World Series Most Valuable Player

Who got game?

Find the man who is going to win the World Series for his team! Well, not necessarily win, but be the key figure in the team’s victory (or perform the best – one man has actually won it without his team winning the World Series – Bobby Richardson of the 1960 New York Yankees).

Here you need to pick the best of the best. The big game performer. The man who is going to rise above the opposition and lead his team to the promised land.

This tends to be a pitcher’s award.

Twelve of the first 14 World Series MVPs were won by pitchers and pitchers have actually won the series MVP 27 times. Since 1995, pitchers have won the award nine times – that’s good going.

Last season, San Francisco Giants gun Madison Bumgarner led his men to victory and was named the MVP.

The award was first presented in 1955 and is decided during the final game of the series by a panel of experts, including officials and reporters who have watched the series unfold.

Prop and player prop bets on the World Series

Baseball prop bets are markets involving facets of the game that aren’t integral to the final result.

These are both team and player. It might be how many home runs a team hits for the series.
Or it will focus on the number of hits or rbis a hitter might record, or the number of strike outs a pitcher might secure.

Sometimes the players are even pitted against each other, as in who will hit more home runs, or who will have more strikeouts. The possibilities are endless.

Props are usually set and forget markets by the bookies, so you can really clean up. The only way the odds change here is if theres a massive bet or a mountain of money, so you can find really strong odds at times.

One of the reasons you should have multiple accounts with different online bookmakers is because of the player prop bets on offer. Each will often have its own specialised market and they will obviously have different odds, so you want to be able to take advantage of this.

Betting on Major League Baseball matches in a nutshell

This will obviously be covered off in more detail in our guide to betting on Major League Baseball, but the same markets apply to each World Series game as the do to each regular season game.

Here’s a look at those in a nut shell

Game or match or head to head or money line betting:
You’ll find this market on every game of the World Series and it’s simply pick the winner. Easy, right? Remember to take note of who is pitching, how they’ve gone on the season and how they’ve fared against the particular opponent. Whoever has the better pitcher will be favourite. You’ll also find markets for the first five innings, just in case you have no faith in the bullpen.

Run line or handicap bets:
This market gives the favourite a run handicap and the outsider and allowance. In the US, this is usually a + or – 1.5. If it’s +1.5, then the team is the outsider and they can still lose by a run and your bet wins. But if it’s -1.5 then the favoured team has to win by two runs or more for you to salute at the pay window. There are often alternative run lines that offer better odds.

Over – under bets:
Bets on the over/under total runs can be made on every World Series game. The bookie sets a line on how many runs they think the two teams will score combined and you have to decide whether it will either go under or exceed their line. Just remember, in the World Series, these are the usually the cream of the pitching crop, so there tends to be lower scores as a general rule.

Prop bets:
Just as there are prop bets for the entire series, each game will have them as well. Will a player score a home run? Will player A pitch more innings than player B, and so on. How many strikeouts will the pitcher record.

World Series parlay or multi betting:
Now usually the regular season has a slate of games that you can throw together in a multi bet or parlay. But it’s harder with the World Series because it is obviously only one game. So think outside the square. throw another sport or two in there. Have the World Series game, into and NBA game, into a soccer game. You can obviously have several legs, they multiply by each other and enhance your odds. But be wary. lose one leg and your bet is fried.

Live betting on MLB World Series games

Live betting is becoming very popular on MLB games and also great for the World Series. You can watch the odds and then bet when the time is right. Maybe the heavy favourite has conceded three runs in the opening innings and been wound out. Jump on if you think they can reel it in!

The hunt for bonuses and a few tips when betting on the World Series

OK, before we go into anything, if you’re going to have a bet, make sure it’s within your means. Don’t be spending the electricity bill on the MLB World Series winner.

It’s not healthy. Use your disposable income once your obligations have been met!

The second thing is to make sure you open multiple online betting accounts with all the reputable sports books.

This way you not only take advantage of sign up bonuses that can include free bets, but you also ensure you can compare odds and get the best available.

Be wary of heavy favourites. This is the World Series! Anything can happen.

Do your research!
Know your teams.
Know your players.
Know your pitchers.
Know your players!

Do your research, check the stats.

Start with the teams recent record against each other and then hit the pitcher. How does he go against the opposition? In the ballpark? Night or day. etc.

Make sure you’re around the injury lists. Is one of the stars out? Do some of the players have niggles? You must know this stuff before betting.

But the most important thing is to simply watch a lot of games.

Watch as much as you can. it’s the only way you can truly get a feel for what is going to go down.
