In round seven of the 2024 AFL Premiership season, it’s one of the most highly anticipated matches of the year as the Essendon Bombers host the Collingwood Magpies in the traditional ANZAC Day clash at the MCG.
The Bombers continued their solid start to the season in round six as they upset the Adelaide Crows by three points on the road. In a back-and-forth match, the Dons trailed by as much as 19 points in the third term, but as their midfield got on top, Brad Scott’s men were able to win another close game.
Sitting 4-2, the Bombers have exceeded plenty of expectations this season. But given their percentage of just 92.7, punters have every right to be sceptical about their prospects.
Essendon got through injury-free against the Crows, so there are no forced changes. However, they are set to regain key forward Peter Wright from suspension, while the versatile Matt Guelfi is a test to return from a calf injury.
Last Saturday, the Magpies put together their best performance of the season as they beat Port Adelaide by 42 points at the MCG. After trailing by as much as 29 points in the second term, Craig McRae’s side flipped the switch and 14 goals to four to run over the top of the Power.
From a 0-3 start, the defending premiers have reminded everyone of their quality with three wins in a row. They aren’t expected to make many changes for Thursday after getting through last week unscathed.
Despite sitting below the Bombers on the ladder, Collingwood are rightful favourites at -200. These contests always seem to be close, with each of the past four ANZAC Day matches decided by under four goals. However, as winners in four of the past five on this day, back the Magpies to win by 39 or less at +105 with top online bookmakers.
Averaging just over 30 disposals per game this season, Essendon captain Zach Merrett has been a standout. He leads the Bombers in clearances and contested possessions as he spends far more time in the middle than anyone else. With Essendon expected to gain advantage in the ruck by playing both Sam Draper and Todd Goldstein, back Merrett to continue his superb form with 30 or more disposals at +115 odds.
Winner of the ANZAC Medal in 2023, Nick Daicos has started this season in excellent form for the Magpies. Averaging 30 disposals a game, the 21-year-old is able to consistently find the football by outworking his direct opponent. Back Daicos to shine again on the big stage with 35 or more disposals at +250 with Nags.bet.
