Arsenal beat Spurs 1-0 to go second in EPL standings

Premier League soccer news

Arsenal claimed the bragging rights in the North London derby on Sunday, beating Spurs 1-0 at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in the English Premier League.

The solitary goal was scored in the 64th minute by Arsenal centre-back Gabriel Magalhaes, who towered above everyone to connect with Bukayo Saka’s corner kick.

The visitors held on to secure victory in a highly intense encounter that featured seven yellow cards in the first half, tying a Premier League record.

Mikel Arteta’s men now sit second on the EPL table on 10 points — two behind leaders Manchester City, who have secured maximum points from their first four games.

With the three crucial points, the Gunners capitalised on Liverpool’s shock 1-0 home defeat to Nottingham Forest on Saturday.

Speaking after the match, Arteta praised his side’s character amid the hostile reception.

“The resilience that we showed — we knew it would be a tough match and that made it easier,” the Arsenal boss said.

“They create an unbelievable atmosphere. We should have done more in the first half, but we knew we were a big threat on set-plays and knew we could hurt them.”

Arteta further commended his side for bouncing back despite the numerous injury concerns.

“I’m delighted, because the team over a season has to go over a lot of hurdles,” he said.

“It was difficult because we have lost a lot of important players for us. Those who waited for the chance trained and behaved in the right manner. This is the result.”

Arsenal travel to Italy on Thursday night for their Champions League opener, with online bookmakers paying -106.38 for the Gunners to defeat Serie A side Atalanta (+268).

Upon returning to England, they will be on the road against champions Manchester City in a potentially season-defining league match.

Leading soccer betting sites have Manchester City as -126.58 favourites against Arsenal (+382) on Sunday afternoon at Etihad Stadium.
