Round 6: Brisbane Lions v Geelong Cats preview

The Geelong Cats are looking to continue their unbeaten start to the 2024 AFL Premiership season as they head up to the Gabba to face the Brisbane Lions on Saturday night.

After a disappointing start to the year, the Lions put together their biggest performance of the season last Thursday as they beat Melbourne by 22 points at the MCG. In a clash between two of the top midfields in the AFL, Brisbane got on top by winning the clearances and inside 50s.

Concerns still remain around the Lions’ forward line, given their high-scoring ability in 2023, it seems only a matter of time until they return to their best.

Brisbane will be without half-forward Zac Bailey for up to six weeks after he suffered an ankle injury against the Demons. Deven Robertson shapes as a like-for-like replacement after he had 33 disposals and a goal last week in the VFL. Half-back Conor McKenna is also available for selection after he missed the last three weeks with a hamstring injury.

The Cats continued their hot start to the season as they dealt with North Melbourne by 75 points last Sunday. Key forward Jeremy Cameron was a standout with six goals, while youngster Max Holmes showed why he is considered a future star of the club with 25 disposals and two goals.

Exceeding plenty of expectations this season, Geelong are sitting second on the ladder. But given they have faced just one finals side from last year — the Saints — this clash with the Lions should be their hardest yet.

With a rapidly shrinking injury list, the Cats are set to be boosted by the return of veterans Tom Hawkins, Patrick Dangerfield and Jake Kolodjashnij. That leaves the likes of Shannon Neale, Jhye Clark and Connor O’Sullivan as the likely omissions.

Brisbane v Geelong AFL R6 betting strategy

After going unbeaten at the Gabba in 2023, the Lions have opened the season with consecutive losses at home. Needing to re-establish the fortress, expect another big performance from the more experienced Brisbane midfield. The Lions should be well rested after their nine-day break, so take them to win by 1-39 points at +110 with Bovada.

Averaging 25.8 disposals to start the season, Brisbane’s Hugh McCluggage has been a bright spot in their slow start. Playing a hybrid role across the midfield and wing, the 26-year-old shifts inside and out at will and leads the club for metres gained this year. Back McCluggage to continue his good start with 25 or more disposals at +115 with the best AFL betting sites.

Getting better with age, Jeremy Cameron continues to be one of the most feared key forwards in the AFL. With career-high disposal numbers in 2024, the 2019 Coleman Medal winner has also kicked multiple goals in every game this season, including his six-goal haul last Sunday. With the Lions giving up multiple scores over 85 points at the Gabba this season, expect Cameron to have plenty of chances as he boots three or more goals at +135 with top online bookmakers.
