Bayern Munich maintained their four-point lead in the Bundesliga after beating VfL Wolfsburg 3-2 on Saturday afternoon at the Allianz Arena.
Leon Goretzka fired the Bavarians into the lead with a low shot from the edge of the box in the 20th minute, before the visitors levelled proceedings four minutes later with a clinical finish by Algerian striker Mohamed Amoura.
The hosts regained their lead before the break through France international Michael Olise, whose long-range strike proved too strong for Wolves goalkeeper Kamil Grabara.
Goretzka got on the finishing end of a set-piece to nod in his second of the day right after the hour mark, while Amoura’s powerful 88th-minute strike proved to be nothing more than a consolation for the travelling side.
Victory ensures Bayern remain top of the table with 45 points, four points ahead of defending champions Bayer Leverkusen in second.
Meanwhile, Wolfsburg are seventh with 27 points after suffering their third defeat in five games.
With three wins from three Bundesliga outings, Bayern head coach Vincent Kompany hailed his side for maintaining their impressive start to the year.
“Even before the game I had the feeling this would be tough,” he said.
“They are enjoying a good run and are dangerous.
“I am satisfied with the result and this is a positive start to the new year.
“At Bayern you have to win every game and we want to do that in the next game as well. Now we are in a good phase and that is more important.”
Bayern Munich will be in the Netherlands on Wednesday night in the Champions League, with leading sports betting sites offering odds of -227.27 for the Bavarians to beat Feyenoord (+550).
Meanwhile, Wolfsburg return to Bundesliga action on Friday, with online bookmakers paying -204.08 for the hosts to beat Holstein Kiel (+550).
