Match Preview: Chennai Super Kings vs. Mumbai Indians

The IPL’s most iconic rivalry resumes in Match 3 of the 2025 season as Chennai Super Kings host the Mumbai Indians at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on Monday morning U.S. time (Sunday night in India). It’s a battle between two powerhouse franchises aiming to bounce back from forgettable 2024 campaigns.

CSK came agonizingly close to the playoffs last year, while MI slumped to a last-place finish. This season, Chennai looks reloaded with a blend of experience and fresh talent. Rachin Ravindra and Devon Conway are likely to open, with MS Dhoni still a guiding presence. Add in spin masters like Ravindra Jadeja, Moeen Ali, and the returning Ravichandran Ashwin, and CSK looks built to dominate at home on a surface that favors turn.

Mumbai, on the other hand, is already on the back foot. Hardik Pandya is suspended and Jasprit Bumrah remains injured, leaving Suryakumar Yadav to captain a squad lacking star power in key areas. Ryan Rickelton has been in excellent touch and is expected to partner with Rohit Sharma at the top, but the lack of an Indian frontline spinner could prove costly at Chepauk.

CSK has owned this rivalry of late, winning four of the last five meetings—including the past three in a row. They also won five of their seven matches at this venue last season, and their squad looks perfectly shaped for the conditions once again.

Predictions: Super Kings vs. Indians

The Super Kings have a massive edge at home, both in squad composition and form. Mumbai has lost their opening match of the IPL in 12 consecutive seasons, and with their two biggest players missing, it’s tough to see that streak ending here. Back CSK to grab the win at -129.87.

Rachin Ravindra is one of the most in-form players in world cricket right now. The left-hander has posted scores of 45, 79, 48, 25, 112, 108, and 37 in his recent T20 outings—and scored 61 off 37 in CSK’s final match last season. Opening the batting gives him a golden opportunity to pile on the runs early. At +575, he’s terrific value to top-score for CSK.

For Mumbai, Ryan Rickelton is one of the few shining lights. He’s recorded scores of 63, 59, 44, 57, and 103* in his last nine T20 innings and looks set to take on the responsibility at the top of the order. If Mumbai are to stay competitive, Rickelton will likely be the key contributor—and a decent shout at +450 to be their leading run-getter.
