The NFL Week 5 schedule is set to kick off with an interesting Thursday Night Football game between the Indianapolis Colts and the Denver Broncos in Colorado. Neither of these teams have fully lived up to their preseason potential, but this battle could catalyze a strong midseason run for the winner. It’s set up to be a great game and we have some picks to make it that much more interesting.
Colts @ Broncos spread pick: Indianapolis +3.5
The Broncos are off to a 2-2 start but have struggled mightily compared to their expectations. After trading for Russell Wilson prior to the season, the Broncos were a trendy Super Bowl pick and their roster, on paper, was looking very strong. However, due to poor quarterback play from Russ and a myriad of weird coaching decisions, the Broncos have yet to play a complete game. Now, they will be without their best offensive weapon in running back Javonte Williams and the offense should struggle even more in the coming weeks. Until Wilson looks like he did three years ago, we are going to stay away from the Broncos.
The Colts also look like a mess. Despite a huge win against the Chiefs in Week 3, they are only 1-2-1. Yes, that’s a tie. Regardless, the Colts haven’t been able to get star running back Jonathan Taylor going and that has drastically hurt their offense. On defense, however, they have been around the league average, and considering the talent they have in that department, that should improve. In this game, we like the Colts defense to lead them to a win and, ultimately, lock up this anaemic Broncos offense. As long as QB Matt Ryan doesn’t turn the ball over a lot, the Colts should keep this game close and be within the number for all four quarters.
Indianapolis Colts +3.5
Colts anytime touchdown pick: Nyhiem Hines
Nyhiem Hines is the change-of-pace running back for the Indianapolis Colts and he has been a valuable piece to their offense. The starting running back, Jonathan Taylor, is questionable to play in this game, and even if he does play, Hines will likely get more work. Hines is not utilized around the goal line when Taylor is healthy, but two years ago – before Taylor was drafted – Hines had seven touchdowns. He is a capable runner and with a hobbled Taylor he has a great chance to score. At +180 with Bovada, we like Hines’ odds to score on a defense that just allowed over 200 rushing yards in the last game.
Nyhiem Hines anytime touchdown
Broncos anytime touchdown pick: Jerry Jeudy
Jerry Jeudy is a talented receiver for the Broncos and he already has two touchdowns this season. He has established himself as a trustworthy red zone option for Russell Wilson, who is rewarding him with a lot of targets. In this game, we expect the Broncos to be able to pass the ball, and considering their star running back is hurt, they may need to pass more around the goal line. That works well for Jeudy and we like his chances to score. At +210, it’s not a lock, but it is a definitive value bet on an ascending weapon.
Jerry Jeudy anytime touchdown
Anytime touchdown value pick: Parris Campbell
Parris Campbell is the second wide receiver for the Indianapolis Colts and has yet to score a touchdown this season. That being said, number one receiver Michael Pittman will have to deal with Patrick Surtain, an elite cornerback for the Denver Broncos. Campbell plays the second-most snaps amongst the Colts receivers and he should be in line for an uptick in targets this game. Although it’s a longshot, Campbell to score is a great value bet.
