Julien Benneteau vs. Frances Tiafoe

The Julien Benneteau and Frances Tiafoe second-round match from Wimbledon 2018 will be a match between a rising star in Tiafoe and a veteran in Benneteau that will soon retire.

While Benneteau has had a solid career that has included numerous wins over top opponents, his Swan Song season has few highlights. With the win in the first round at Wimbledon 2018, Benneteau is still just 7-8 on the season.

Meanwhile, Tiafoe is 19-11 following his own first-round win. His ranking of 52nd does not actually speak to his playing level right now as he appears to be mid-ascension. Tiafoe might best be viewed as a player in the Top 35 right now and that means he clearly outmatches Benneteau at what is the tail-end of the Frenchman’s career.

Benneteau is highly unlike to close Tiafoe out in an efficient match. Yet, if their match is of significant length it’s hard to picture the 36-year old Benneteau outlasting a 20-year old rising star.

At coin-toss odds on the moneyline, Tiafoe is certainly the pick.

Recommendation: take Tiafoe for the win at -109.89 with William Hill

Bernard Tomic vs. Kei Nishikori

Bernard Tomic’s game doesn’t appear to be all that bad right now. Despite a ranking of 184th in the world heading into Wimbledon, the Aussie has played well on grass of late. Tomic made light work of a relative unknown in Wimbledon’s first round and heads into the 2nd with some momentum against Kei Nishikori. The former Wimbledon quarterfinalist looks like a player that is playing well above his ranking.

But Nishikori himself is a little below the radar. Injury problems stalled him in 2017 and early 2018, a situation that has affected his ranking. But wins in Monte Carlo over top-five players Alexander Zverev and Marin Cilic showed that Nishikori wasn’t far off from his old self. Even at the French Open, it took the tournament’s eventual runner-up to take Nishikori out.

While grass is a more difficult surface for the Japanese player than clay, Nishikori should be viewed as above his ranking of 28th right now. He seems to be playing more like a player in the World No. 11 to World No. 15 range. The insight with Tomic is that he hasn’t beaten someone ranked 28th or higher since August of 2016.

In a match between two players looking to prove that they are relevant in majors, go with the one whose proven top-tennis is the better. That is certainly Nishikori, the former World No. 4 and one-time Grand Slam runner-up.

Recommendation: Nishikori’s moneyline odds with William Hill at -227.27.

Mikhail Kukushkin vs. Rafael Nadal

Rafael Nadal has his share of surprise losses at Wimbledon. Since last making the final way back in 2011, Nadal has dropped matches to Gilles Muller, Dustin Brown, Nick Kyrgios (when he was ranked 144th), Steve Darcis, and Lukas Rosol.

Heading into his second-round match at Wimbledon, you have to pause and think over lengthy odds on Mikhail Kukushkin. A dangerous player, Kukushkin has been afforded little chance to defeat Nadal despite the Spaniard’s lengthy history of bad losses at the All England Club post-2011.

Kukushkin is just 10-13 on the season. However, his recent result on grass from Eastbourne speaks to some form on the surface. He made the semifinals through David Ferrer and Kyle Edmund. Accordingly, you have to think that Kukushkin might be very-alive in the match against Nadal on Day 4 from Wimbledon. Kukushkin may not prevail but punters should bet the Kazahkstani to win at least one set in the contest with William Hill.

Recommendation: Kukushkin to win a set at +114 with William Hill

Belinda Bencic vs. Alison Riske

Belinda Bencic has struggled with injuries in recent seasons but she has also been tipped for the top of the women’s game. Her ceiling is so high that if she hints at all of finding her best tennis then she needs to be backed until something says otherwise.

Tennis punters should, therefore, be getting behind Bencic, especially on the grass-court surface, following her first-round victory at the All England Club over 6-seed Caroline Garcia.

Bencic will face Alison Riske in the next round and she, Bencic, is priced as an underdog. Yet, it’s hard to consider her as such against Riske. The American player will garner some bets following a grass-court title in Surbiton and four match-wins in the main draws of Mallorca and ‘s-Hertogenbosch. But the Surbiton title was just an ITF title. At the tour-level she did beat Angelique Kerber but there were also losses to Coco Vandeweghe and Sam Stosur, the latter of which is hardly a grass-court guru.

Bencic at $2.20 to win this contest could be the steal of the second round with William Hill. Riske has only actually survived the second round twice in her last 15 majors. Meanwhile, Bencic has made at least the third round 6 times in her young career already.

Recommendation: Bencic’s moneyline with William Hill @ +120
