EPL: Liverpool reportedly in talks with Ange Postecoglou

As the football world eagerly anticipates Jurgen Klopp’s departure from Liverpool, speculation linking Ange Postecoglou to the Anfield job are gaining momentum.

The 58-year-old Australian coach, currently at the helm of rival EPL club Tottenham, finds himself increasingly linked to the soon-to-be vacant Liverpool manager position.

Postecoglou has guided Tottenham to fourth place in the Premier League standings — a marked improvement from their previous season, when Spurs finished eighth.

Reports suggest that Liverpool have extended an invitation for Postecoglou to interview for the managerial role, signalling the seriousness of their interest.

Speaking on SEN’s The Run Home, host Andy Maher disclosed insider information indicating the former Socceroos coach’s potential rendezvous with his dream job at Liverpool.

Maher also pointed to the fact that Postecoglou is a long-time supporter of the Merseyside club.

“Let’s not lose sight of the fact about this – he is a passionate Liverpool man,” he said.

“Liverpool fans have shown that if you are ‘one of us’ … and you have success, you are on the fast track to become an immortal at Anfield.

“He’s got to go (if Liverpool make him an offer). He may never get another chance.”

While Postecoglou emerges as a frontrunner for the position, Liverpool’s sights may also be set on another illustrious figure.

Xabi Alonso, the current Bayer Leverkusen manager, has reportedly been in discussions with his former club for several months as the Reds look the secure Klopp’s successor as soon as possible.

The 42-year-old Spaniard spent five seasons at Anfield during his decorated playing career, which included Liverpool’s famous UEFA Champions League triumph in 2005.

Alonso’s Leverkusen side sits top of the Bundesliga standings, five points clear of Bayern Munich following their 3-0 win over the Bavarian giants last weekend.

Liverpool are also locked in a tense title race, holding a two-point lead over Manchester City following a 3-1 victory over Burnley in Matchweek 24.

Soccer betting sites have Man City — who have a game in hand — pegged as -188.68 favourites to successfully defend their title, with Liverpool paying +275 to hold them out.
