NHL betting strategy and tips
Wagering on the NHL online is very easy when you choose a secure and licensed online ice hockey betting site. Still, even after signing up and joining one of our top NHL betting sites there are some things that you should know when it comes to NHL betting picks.
- Compare Markets
All reputable NHL betting bookmakers will have odds on their site and while they are nearly the same at every one there are not exactly the same. If you have accounts at a few or several sportsbooks online that offer NHL betting than it is a good idea to shop around to find the best NHL betting odds available. Again, the odds will not differ much between the bookmakers, but if you can get better odds at one why not make that bet, as if it is a winner you will be winning more money. This is especially the case if you plan to make a wager for a significant amount of money, as the better the odds the better the payout. - Do Your Research
In speaking of doing research it is a good idea to research games, referred to as handicapping games, before you make a NHL bet. By handicapping a game, you can go into the wager with more information and you can get an edge on the bookie by knowing who the game or bet you want to make will unfold. For example, if making a straight bet on an NHL game look at the head to head records between the two teams playing, their recent form, if key players are injured, and how the team’s home and away record is. These are just a few things to do little home work on in a NHL straight bet. The more homework you do when it comes to a game or particular wager the more it will increase your chances of winning the bet. - Stick to Your Bankroll
When it comes to NHL or ice hockey betting, or any type of sports betting for that matter, it is important that you stick to your betting bankroll. Have a certain amount that you can wager on the NHL and stick to it. The rule of thumb in gambling is never gamble with more than you can afford to lose. Keep the bankroll amount, as the NHL season is a marathon not a sprint. If you are winning than you can bet a little more and if you are losing you can bet a little less. Never hedge your NHL bets, as that means chasing losses trying to get a big win to recoup your money. Hedging bets is the quickest way to get in a deep hole and lose all of your money.

NHL trophies and futures markets
Betting on the NHL is a massive industry in its own right. Along with the broad range of match markets on offer from week to week, gamblers can indulge in several popular futures options.
- Stanley Cup betting – The Stanley Cup is awarded every year to the winner of the NHL finals series. First contested in 1893, it is the oldest professional trophy in North American sport. The Montreal Canadiens lead the way with 24 titles, while the Detroit Red Wings (11) are the most successful of the US ice hockey teams.
- Conference champions – Most NHL bookies run markets on which two teams will win through the playoffs to contest the Stanley Cup. The Eastern Conference champion takes home the Prince of Wales Trophy, while the Clarence S. Campbell Bowl goes to the Western Conference winner.
- Division winners – Each conference is split into two divisions. The Atlantic, Metropolitan and Pacific divisions each contain eight teams, while the Central group features seven. Leading online bookmakers run outright markets on all four divisions.

National Hockey League history
The NHL was founded in Canada in 1917 and specifically in Montreal, Quebec. There were only four teams at first all based in Canada and teams folded and the league expanded some, but in 1942 the Original Six teams were in place in the Montreal Canadiens, Toronto Maple Leafs, Boston Bruins, Detroit Red Wings, Chicago Blackhawks and New York Rangers, which are all still in existence.
Over time ice hockey in the USA has blossomed. In 1967 saw the addition of six more teams joining the NHL and at that time the league created two divisions. In the next 25 years the league expanded further to 22 teams and this time was called the “expansion era.” Staring in the 1990’s it was a turbulent time for the NHL, as Labor action stopped play in the league four times between 1992 and 2013 and then the entire season was cancelled in 2004-2005 because of a labor dispute between the players and the league. Since then it has been, for the most part, smooth sailing for the most popular hockey league on the planet.
With sports betting regulating now being rolled at a rapid rate across the United States, there are more and more regulated ice hockey and NHL betting sites available for locals. The National Hockey League is also bet upon frequently by international punters, with this ice hockey competition drawing betting interest right across the world.
