Champions Gor Mahia will be on the road this weekend where they are scheduled for a match against Kenya Commercial Bank in the SportPesa Kenyan Premier League.
The Sunday afternoon encounter is penciled in for the Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos.
The 17-time KPL champions have struggled to find their bearings since the departure of head coach Dylan Kerr right before the start of the 2018/19 season. The Englishman seems to have swiftly adapted to life down South, as he has managed to elevate the Black Leopards from deep in the relegation zone all the way to eleventh in the Premier Soccer League standings.
Gor’s progress on the other hand has evidently stalled this season, despite hiring the services of Turkish tactician Hassan Oktay right at the start of the season. K’Ogallo yearly routine clash with English Premier League side Everton won’t be happening this season, as the KPL champions were bundled out of the SportPesa Super Cup tournament on Wednesday afternoon by lowly rated Tanzanian Premier League side, Mbao FC.
The current holders and two-time champions of the SportPesa Super Cup were beaten 4-3 in Dar es Saalam on post match penalties; this coming after normal time ended in a one-all draw.
Mayienga looked to be cruising to a third consecutive semifinal appearance when Dennis Oliech converted from the spot, but David Mwasi restored parity for the Tanzanians eleven minutes to stoppage time; inevitably forcing the match into penalties.
Francis Kahata, Boniface Omondi and Jacques Tuyisenge buried their chances for the KPL champions, by skipper Haron Shakava had his shot parried away by goalkeeper Metachi Mnata, whereas Shafique Batambuze could only manage to hit the crossbar.
Mbao were in stark contrast efficient from 12-yards, as they converted all but one of their penalties—an Ibrahim Hashimu shot which was repelled by Gor keeper Fredrick Odhiambo.
Back in the Kenyan Premier League, KCB managed to hold Western Stima to a barren draw during their midweek encounter at the Moi Stadium in the Lakeside City of Kisumu. Earning a vital point against a highly rated Stima side was by all accounts a commendable result for the Bankers who have struggled since returning to the top division this season.
KCB vs. Gor Mahia betting prediction
Although making an early exit in the SportPesa Super Cup is without question a major red flag for one of the most decorated and highly accomplished teams in East and Central Africa, the biggest cause for concern is Gor Mahia’s form in the Kenyan Premier League.
Having won five of the last six KPL titles, even whilst making managerial changes in between, K’Ogallo just haven’t clicked with Oktay. The champions are currently sixth on the log with 13 points; seven points adrift of leaders Mathare United.
No one has written off Gor as far as the title race is concerned—given the plethora of talent and extensive nature of their squad, not to mention the experience the team harbors—but it is the impressive form by the likes of Mathare United and Bandari that is causing sleepless nights for the Green army.
A win this weekend against a relegation destined KCB side is exactly what Hassan Oktay needs to settle the nerves at the camp.
